Men's Gray Paddle Thermal Wear

Aim for a slim, non-bulky base layer with four-way stretch so it moves with your stroke and won’t bunch under a wetsuit. Flatlock seams and lightweight fleece linings reduce rubbing, and sizing from XS to XXL helps you find a close fit without restricting mobility.

Merino wool and synthetic blends are both solid choices depending on priorities: 100% merino like the Smartwool Classic offers natural warmth and odor control, while polyester and fleece blends dry fast and breathe well. Many paddle tops also advertise quick-dry properties under 30 seconds, which is handy for repeated splashes.

Both wetsuits and drysuits are meant for sub-60°F water because they provide full-body insulation, but opt for a drysuit when staying fully dry or long exposures are important. Wetsuits rely on neoprene for insulation, whereas a fleece-lined base like the Immersion Research Thick Skin Fleece Union Suit can be used for extra warmth under a drysuit.

Front quarter-zips and half-zips are the easiest way to vent heat quickly during hard paddling, and light fleece linings retain warmth without overheating. Models like the REI Co-op Midweight Half-Zip pair venting with quick-dry fabrics and UPF 50+ sun protection for variable conditions.

For general chilly conditions, look at warmth ratings such as Merino 185 or 200 gsm, which balance insulation and mobility for active paddling. If you want integrated full-body warmth for prolonged cold, consider a fleece-lined union suit; otherwise a midweight half-zip top layers well under jackets and wetsuits.
