Purple Knives & Multi-tools

For light-duty camp chores and everyday carry, folding knives with 2–4 inch blades are more packable and often sit around a 4–5 inch closed length. For heavy field dressing or bushcraft, go with a robust fixed blade 5 inches or longer like the Gerber StrongArm for durability and easier cleaning.

For most hiking and camp chores a 2–4 inch folder gives good balance between control and portability, with closed lengths around 4–5 inches for pocket carry. Heavier work or batoning favors fixed blades 5 inches and up, but expect extra weight within the typical 2–12 oz range.

Think about what you’ll actually use: pliers, a saw, and a bit driver cover most field repairs, while scissors and a small blade help with food prep and first-aid tasks. Models like the Leatherman Wave Plus pack about 18 tools including needlenose pliers and saws, which keeps a lot of capability in one compact unit.

Stainless steels like S30V offer excellent edge retention and corrosion resistance, so you’ll spend less time sharpening on multi-day trips. Also weigh handle materials—titanium or aluminum handles reduce carry weight while paired steels keep cutting performance and durability high.

Yes, one-hand opening gives faster access and textured grips help prevent slipping when your hands are wet or gloved. Look for secure locking systems such as Axis or liner locks and lightweight titanium or aluminum handles if you plan to carry daily.
