Measure your sleeping pad and bag against interior dimensions since most bivys run about 210–220 cm long and 60–70 cm wide. These shelters fit one person snugly, so allow a little extra length for your packed pad and consider models with pad straps to keep everything in place.

For ultralight fastpacking, tarp-and-bivy combos or ultralight sacks are ideal because some weigh only 0.8–2 kg and pack under 1 L. The Outdoor Research Helium Bivy is a popular choice at about 16 oz and adds Gore-Tex breathability for comfort.

Look for hydrostatic head ratings in the 1500–3000 mm range and factory-sealed seams to ensure full waterproofing in rain. Fabrics like Gore-Tex uppers and urethane-coated nylon floors combine breathability with a durable, tent-style bottom.

Hooped and hybrid bivys offer more headroom and pole-supported vestibules, making them better for 2–3 season trips and buggy summer conditions. Models such as the Black Diamond BiPod Bivy use dual hoops and a roughly 40-inch peak height to keep your face clear and allow mesh panels for insect protection.

Expect low-rise geometry with head-end hoops for face clearance and full-length or ventilation zippers to manage condensation. Many designs include mesh head panels and multiple sliders for armholes so you can get airflow without inviting bugs inside.
