Boot Dryers & Heaters

For overnight drying, a convection dryer is usually the right choice since it passively draws room air through vertical tubes and heats it slowly. Expect typical convection drying times of eight to twelve hours, which works well when you don’t need a fast turnaround.

Pack a USB-powered backcountry dryer like the Grakksaw Backcountry Bootdryer for remote use because it’s under six ounces and runs off USB power. These compact models draw about 5 volts and 0.230–0.270 amps, so they use roughly 25 percent of a phone charger’s power and fit easily in a pack.

Most convection and forced-air units accommodate one or two pairs of boots, and some larger models will hold up to three pairs. If you need to dry multiple items—boots, gloves, or helmets—look at models like the DryGuy Force Dry DX which is designed to dry two pairs and extras in the same cycle.

Heat socks with battery packs are ideal for active, on-the-go warmth because they warm the whole foot during use, and brands like Hotronic and Therm-ic offer battery-powered systems for on-slope mobility. Heated insoles work well if you want discreet, foot-focused heat and they come in standard shoe sizes for a snug fit.

USB backcountry dryers typically draw 5 volts at about 0.230–0.270 amps, which is roughly a quarter of a typical phone charger’s output. Drying time varies by type: portable USB units are slower than forced hot air, convection units take eight to twelve hours, forced-air models finish in one to three hours, and PTC units sit in between.
