The lightness of a twin rope combined with all the advantages of a double rope.

On technical ice and sketchy alpine forays, few rope systems can compete with the 8.1mm Beal Ice Line Unicore Golden Dry Climbing Rope. The Golden Dry technology individually treats each fiber in both the sheath and core for maximum water resistance, and the ultra-low 4.9KN impact force rating minimizes stress on anchor points, bolstering your confidence when you're pumping-out above marginal protection.

    • Golden Dry technology coats each sheath and core fiber with a polymer treatment for high resistance to water, humidity, and dirt
    • Unicore construction eliminates sheath slippage in wet conditions or when the sheath is accidentally severed
    • 8.1mm diameter supplies the low weight and smooth running of a twin rope while still providing the versatility of a half rope
    • Ultra low impact force of 4.9 KN minimizes stress on anchor-points, making the rope ideal for marginal protection in snow and ice
    • 9-10 UIAA fall rating ensures many days of reliable performance

    Decent Rope

Yes, the rope itself is good. Like most modern ropes, the sheath is solid, no water/ice issues. It is solidly built and I have never had any reasons for concerns. There are two complaints here: Why not include a halfway mark? It costs them nothing and helps climbers tremendously. Some companies changes sheath patterns, and they can't even give us a halfway mark?. While I rarely use it as a single rope, it is nice to have. The bigger issue, and the reason I may never buy another Beal rope again, is that these are probably the worst coiled ropes on the market. Be ready to spend a couple hours prepping the rope to climb and a few long rappels to really get the kinks out. Most ropes these days are ready to climb upon purchase, but with Beal, I have to take a half day off work to get my ropes ready for the crag!

      Nice Ropes

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

The Ice Lines handle really well, hold up to normal use, and don't absorb as much water as some other dry-treated ropes. Just be sure to give these ropes some love before taking them out, because they are very twisty when first un-packaged. I wish they came with middle marks, but that was an easy fix with a Sharpie Rub-a-Dub laundry marker (Bluewater recommends this method on their ropes, so I figure it's OK on Beal too).

      great all round half rope

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The Beal ice line makes a great half rope set up for alpine climbing as well as waterfall ice. They are thick enough that they have a nice feel for belaying and rappelling, while still being quite light weight. I have used beal ice lines around the world, both for person use and for guiding. The Unicore technology give me good confidence when pitching it out in zones with sharp edges and areas of objective hazard.

The Beal ice line is the most durable half rope I have used, and I have not experienced as much water absorption as with other "dry" ropes.

      I highly recommend them.

      great all round half rope

The best ice/alpine ropes I've used

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Pros: Very durable (for half ropes), amazingly low water absorption, good handling- even over several years.

      Cons: No middle mark

I'm now on my second set of these, and I only retired the first pair due to age (not condition). I use them regularly, mostly for ice climbing, occasionally for alpine rock. Contrasted to some other brands I've used, these simply stay the closest to their original condition and performance over time. The minimal water absorption is worth mentioning twice as it really makes one's quality of life better when climbing wet ice multiple days in a row.

Note: I've only owned these with the Unicore and Golden Dry options
