Why We Built The Backcountry MTN Air Hooded Jacket
"There's nothing I can't do in this jacket. It's somehow both warm on early-morning hikes and cooling and breathable later in the day when it's warm." —Gearhead® Expert Jessie
Air permeable and extremely packable, we built the Backcountry MTN Air Hooded Jacket with high-output activities in mind. The Pertex Quantum Air face fabric immediately starts dumping excess heat while also shielding us from light precipitation. The real kicker on this jacket is its packability. It packs down tiny, so we always have a spot for it in our pack.

Only knock is it's a little long - though I suppose that's ideal for biking. I'm 6'0 and ordered a Medium. The fit is the only issue. And it would've been nice if the hood fit my helmet more easily, though I realize the jacket was not designed for cycling (my main use). Love how light it is, and the reflectors as well. The color is great, and the zip pockets are convenient. It displaced heat pretty well after I tested it on the rowing machine.

Love the color pop! It stands out in a world of blues, blacks and greys. Fits to size, lightly waterproof if you're caught in a quick rain shower. Meanwhile if you're spending the day out on the boat, it's a nice windbreaker, and stops the occasional spray as well.

Insane Jacket

I don't know how a jacket can keep you warm on a cold morning, but then also keep you cool later in the day when the sun is beating down. It's got this awesome wicking material that actually feels cold when you're biking or running in it drenched in sweat. But then it dries super fast and then keeps you warm when the sun goes down. It's super light and fits in a camelbak too. 10 out of 10 on this thing. It will go with me on every excursion from now on.

I dont leave the house without this. Protects me from mosquitos, from the wind and adds some shading from the sun. Lightweight enough to forget you have it on and packable enough to fit in your pocket if need be, or in your running vest or anywhere you want to fit it in your backpack. This with the Runoff 2.5L Rain Jacket is the perfect combo for outdoor adventures where it might rain or be a little breezy

This jacket is incredible. It is equal parts rain jacket, wind shell and sun hoody with each function actually working. I've used it anywhere from desert hiking to spring alpine tours and everything inbetween and it has never disapointed me. Now its not 100% waterproof but I've stayed dried through many spring/ summer storms, with being completely dry 15 minutes after the rain stops. The fit is great, just a little on the loose side which is perfect. One thing is I find difficult is to stow it, but for what it does so that is more than tolerable.

BIG FAN

This is the perfect lightweight jacket for those unpredictable days that happen every shoulder season. Overall this jacket is something I consider grabbing on my way out the door all spring long, it's light weight and water resistant to protect you against a light drizzle. I've been packing this jacket into its chest pocket and using the strap to slide it onto my MTB hip pack when the forecast is unpredictable, its so light i don't even notice it there. In my mind this is an active windbreaker, it breathes excellent, and keeps the elements out just enough. The overall fit is pretty good, I've found the arms to be a bit tight, so size up if you've got a gun show, but the body of this jacket fits excellent. If you haven't bought one yet, just do it, you won't regret this purchase.

Got one of these for myself and my wife. I run a little warm and usually wet out and get clammy fast in a normal rain jacket. This jacket doesn’t let that happen. Kept me dry in a down pour while grilling and is great to leave on while pedaling hard on the trails. The forearms are a little tight for me as I have larger arms but the rest of the jacket fits great. This will be a staple for me from now on. I’d like to see more clothing in this material. Like a vest and shorts and pants. Let’s make it happen backcountry keep up the good work on your clothing line.

Now I know why my friends at Backcountry have been digging this jacket. The stretchy, air permeable fabric really stands out, keeping me comfortable across a wide range of temperatures on my shoulder season hikes, trail runs, and bike rides. The MTN Air Jacket really sold me while backpacking Old Logger's Path in Pennsylvania. I could keep the jacket on without overheating on steep climbs with temps approaching 60—thanks to that air permeable exterior—while also staying warm with just a baselayer underneath when temps were in the 30s and 40s the following morning. It also sheds light precipitation and looks sick in that lime punch color with the goat logo on the sleeve. This feels like a nice upgrade over the North Face wind jacket that sadly didn't make it home from my last Grand Canyon hike.

I picked this up as a lightweight shell for early season mountain biking and have been thoroughly impressed. It packs down incredibly small so it takes up minimal space in my hip pack. The fabric doesn't make noise when you move like you get with other wind jackets. It also dumps heat remarkably well so once I throw it on I usually don't need to take it off. The dual front zip also allows me to vent the front if needed without having it completely open, very underrated feature. Big fan overall and see myself using this all year in various conditions.

Gamechanger for running in rain

As a longtime trail and road runner, I am skeptical of rain gear. Any product that claims rain and wind resistance may indeed handle both duties, but after a few miles you are sweating like a tamale in a steamer. Rain jacket construction, generally stiff and plasticky, is fine for strolls to the coffee shop but impractical for distance running, unless your goal is to make a lower wrestling weight class. I tried the MTN Air for an 18 mile run last weekend in 37F light drizzle in Central Pennsylvania. I internally debated wearing it, thinking a more likely chance than not that I'd be carrying it after I overheated. Instead, this lightweight, almost gossamer material kept the light rain at bay while dissipating body heat for the duration of my run. When the occasional wind picked up, the MTN Air kept the chill away. Really a remarkable jacket. My only question is where have you been all my life, MTN Air? Fit is true to size. I am 5'7" 145 lbs and the small is sized perfectly but still with ample room to swing my arms about.
