    The sheep know best.

When it comes to temperature regulation and comfort during cold-weather activities, the delectably soft, moisture-wicking performance of merino wool can't be beat. Add in snazzy prints and colors, and you get the SmartWool Women's Merino Midweight Pattern Zip Top—which, in sheep language translates to, "the perfect form-fitting layer for humans that like to play in the snow."

Flatlock seams prevent chafing during skate-ski missions and an 8-inch zip provides ventilation when your trail run gets sweaty. Best of all, merino wool provides natural odor control, so you can wear it day after day knowing you won't end up smelling like you did just that. Whether you're hiking, running errands after yoga, hitting the slopes, or relaxing next to a crackling fire with a glass of Merlot, this top will be the first layer you reach for time and time again.

    • A midweight basealyer ideal for skiing and winter activities
    • Merino wool for exceptional warmth and temperature regulation
    • Natural odor control makes it ideal for multi-day trips
    • Form-fitting to accommodate layering without bulk
    • Flatlock seams prevent chafed skin during activity
    • Zippered neck dumps excess heat when you're on the move

    Best mid-weight layer EVER!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 5'9"
    • Weight: 135lbs

I have had my Smartwool mid-weight zip top for almost five years and I can honestly say it is the most reliable, versatile article of outdoor clothing I've ever owned. I've worn this climbing in Joshua Tree, backpacking in Chicago Basin, and skiing at Crested Butte. It's so comfortable, warm for it's weight, and the quarter zip is so necessary (especially with the crazy swings in weather we get in Colorado). The elbows are finally starting the wear out (after five years) so I'm in the market for another one this year and I plan on getting the exact same one. My only complaint is that Smartwool doesn't make these with thumb holes anymore. I love that my current one has this! This is seriously the perfect mid layer for nearly any outdoor activity.

    Didn’t work for me

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Extra small
    • Height: 5'2"
    • Weight: 115lbs

Made my skin itch. Couldn’t really wear as they were that uncomfortable.

    Cozy

    • Size Bought: small
    • Height: 5'3"
    • Weight: 110lbs

Smartwool is so cozy! I like the zipper neck (the zipper is NOT annoying), and the material is very comfy and warm. I wore it under my snowboarding coat on a very windy day, and I felt nice and warm.

Size up if you want as MID layer

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: S
    • Height: 5'2"
    • Weight: 120lbs

I have the crew neck in S and wear it as a base layer. I wanted this to be a mid-layer and I should have sized up to M especially as there is a bit of shrinkage over the years. But they are out of M so I could not keep! Very comfortable and even though I get itchy with many wool items, SmartWool does not feel itchy to me.

    Stamp of approval.

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Moms everywhere give the thumbs up for these midweight baselayers whether they use 'em for PJs, errands, or nordic skiing. The merino wool is itch-free, naturally odor-resistant, breathable, and toasty warm. This was a Christmas gift for my mother-in-law––she's around 5'4" and 110lbs, and the XS fit well.

    Great Gift for Skier

My aunt requested this for her birthday and makes a great gift for any snow lady in your life. Keeps body temps warm and well regulated. The color options are nice and has a comfortable and accurate fit. Pairs well with smartwool midweight bottoms. This material even repels odors from body sweat.

    Smartwool is the standard!

I bought these as a gift and to put it simple - they absolutely love it and wish I had got them 3 more.
Great baselayer shirt and wished they could use it everyday skiing. The material is very soft without allowing much friction and no itching against bare skin. This particular item is super warm and a must on any of those cold days. It's great formfitting stylish under layer that doesn't feel too tight or too loose, it is definitely in the goldilocks area of a just right fit. They got the Glacial Blue in a Small and it is definitely true to size and the color on site.

    love my smartwool pullover shirt

    perfect xs merino pullover
a little itchy bu got used to it
keeps me nice and warm, all the time including when playing tennis.
    wish they have other colors/patterns

    Excellent Quality

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 5'4"
    • Weight: 135lbs

This form fitting and versatile sweater goes the distance no matter the occasion. So far I have worn it hiking, taking walks in the neighborhood and running errands. It keeps me very warm with only a light jacket over it and a camisole underneath it. I am 5'4" and 135 pounds with broad shoulders and a bit of a belly, so the large was the best option for me. The fabric weave is tight and not itchy. It's a stylish sweater and looks great with leggings. The aubergine heather is beautiful and goes well with grays and blacks. Love being able to zip up or down depending on how cool or warm it is. While pricey, this sweater was well worth the cost and no doubt will last for years.

    I LOVE SMARTWOOL!!!!!!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 5'6"
    • Weight: 145lbs

I keep coming back for more. A little pricey - so I wait for them to go on sale. Worth every penny. I have 3 of the zip tops and wear them for hiking, skiing, and just to go out in. The fit is flattering and I get compliments all the time. They are so comfortable, keep their shape, and look amazing. I hope they never stop making this product. I just got back from XMas in SLC. It was around 18 degrees when I walked my dog in the mornings and I just wore my SMARTWOOL under a down coat and felt toasty.
Great quality. I'll keep getting them. I'm 5'6, 145 lbs (athletic build) and the medium fit is perfect.

    Warm, soft, cozy, flattering!

This is my 3rd Smartwool Mid 250 Zip Neck top in three years! My first two have been two of my year round favourite tops, it was time to buy another. I've used these tops on their own and as a second layer over light weight tops. The feel and weight of the material are awesome, so cozy, warm and versatile. The zip up neck is great for a variety of temperatures. These tops go through the delicate cycle of my washer most weeks and hang dry in a few hours. I've had them on extended wilderness trips and worn them 25/7 for several days and they still look great. Mine have held their shape despite all the use and abuse. I love the longer length and flattering slimming fit, . I like a bit more ease in my tops and have a broad back and shoulders so wear a large, but a medium would fit well too, just my personal preference. I wear these tops around the house, shopping, casual social events, hiking, working out, kayaking, cycling, camping... even take my solid coloured one along as an evening sweater at all but very dressy events. I always make sure there is one in my bag when I travel. I hope they never stop making these, in the mean time I'll keep stocking up just in case.

    love love love

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

i am a 155lb 5'8" 34C, i typically wear a size 6 top, i got the medium in this for the longer sleeves and torso coverage. I love the weight of it, it is warm and soft and held its shape through multiple wearings and washings (hang to dry). The clearwater is a beautiful feminine color, i loved it so much i ordered the berry as well. I wear these for skiing/snowboarding, hiking and often just to work and around town.

    I want more!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

I absolutely love my Smartwool base layer!!!! My friend said Smartwool is the best, and she is right. It is warm enough for this cold winter in Tennessee. If I lived in an area where the winters were 20 degrees or cooler much of the winter I would get the 150 weight. I am 5'4," weight about 130, a little busty and I got the medium. It fits well and is not tight, though I wish it were a tad tighter on me, but I'm happy with the medium. It really regulates my temperature well. I wear it under my down jacket and stay toasty warm. When I well a shell over the jacket I am warm into the single digits. Being a true breathable base layer, I sometimes get a tad bit chilly just wearing this without another layer on top. It wicks moisture away beautifully and I stay very dry.

I love the berry heather color, though people who dislike bright, vivid colors might not care for it. An extra detail is that the turtleneck is lined with the same pattern as my smartwool beanie in the same pink color. The top is a tiny bit scratchy, but, even though I cannot wear most wool without an undershirt, I soon forget about it.

My only complaint is that the wool piles (sp?, get little balls) around the wrists in a few places. But it is not bad enough to give it 4 stars. Be careful! You might want to buy more:)

    Have 3, Want More

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

Since I've been wearing out my older 2 Smartwools like this, I figured I'd get another this year. Got the Clearwater and love it. Fit is great since I'm tall with long arms. These shirts are my winter go-to's.

    Fabulous color and fit

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs large

I bought the horizon blue, and it is slightly darker than the pic but still a gorgeous turquoise blue. I'm 5'8" and 158lbs and the length of the torso on this is great - the hem hits me mid hip, so if I want to tuck it in, it won't be popping out. The general fit is a bit big - I got the large and it is a touch baggy, but I didn't want it skin tight. The sleeves are a bit long (covers almost to the knuckles), which I prefer because I don't like my wrists exposed in the winter, and I like to pull my hands in sometimes. BUMMER: NO THUMBHOLES! This is the only downside to this shirt :( Otherwise great color and great fit. I usually by icebreaker merino base layers in lg and they fit just right except for length (a bit short on me)- this is my first smartwool purchase and so far so good :) We'll see how it washes and holds up under constant wear this season...

    So soft and cozy!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have this shirt in 3 different color! This is my favorite piece from Smartwool. It is soft, and warm, and you can wear it alone, with a vest, or under a coat. It always keeps my core regulated and I never feel too hot. I think I need to buy one more while they still have my size in stock! Worth every penny!

    soft, versatile

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I haven't bought Smartwool for years, mainly due to their weird patterns. But this year's design is a big surprise. Love the Imperial Purple stripes - classy enough to wear to work but versatile enough to wear out to the trails. Fabric is super soft. And since it doesn't smell, I wear it all the time and it has only visited the washer once after 2 months of wear. It does run a bit big - I had to size down. I also have the crewneck which actually runs true to size, so keep that in mind when you order.
