Throwing down serious weather protection while being virtually weightless isn't easy, but the Sea to Summit Escapist Tarp does a darn good job. This rugged 15D Ultra-Sil Nano nylon tarp pitches in any one of many ways, with the A-frame and lean-to setups being the most common. A PU coating and fully-taped seams keep the rain at bay. With eight durable Hypalon guy-out points, we can tie the Escapist to trees, stake it out, or pitch it using trekking poles, so we're always protected, no matter the terrain or conditions.

Light supplemental tarp
- Familiarity:
- I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
- Size Bought:
- standard
Bought this for a hike on the West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island. Used on the first night as a second fly above the tent during a huge rainstorm. Then used it as a primary shelter on the beach with my poles. Found it light, quick drying and not terribly bulky. It is about the size of a nalgene bottle rolled up. The material is thin but it didn't feel fragile. Would recommend.

Lightweight, versatile, durable
I’ve been using this tarp for nearly a decade and I absolutely love it. I have the large size with the inner tent and it’s incredibly spacious and lightweight. I’ve used it in just about every condition you could imagine and it’s held up exceptionally well. I’ve survived big summer storms in the alpine, used it in light snow, stayed dry in absolute downpours, and just about anything else you can think of. The 10x10 size feels like a palace when you’re solo and it disappears in your pack. Barely shows any sign of wear. Can’t recommend this tarp enough.

Perfect UL hammock companion
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This thing pairs perfectly with my UL hammock. Got the L incase I wanna snag the bug tent and footprint. Really happy with it alone so far.

Great Tarp
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Used the tarp several nights while hiking the Appalachian Trail as added cover from heavy rains. This tarp rocked and was great. It added a bit of a vestibule cover to the front of the tent and kept us wonderfully dry

Best tarp I have ever owned
I purchased the larger of the Escapist tarps (10' x 10') a few years ago, and I love it. I have owned a number of tarps over the past 45 years or so, and this one is by far the best I have ever used. The material is very light, strong, and waterproof; the attachment points are very sturdy; and the attached cordage and adjusters are very helpful during setup. The one modification I've made -- and I've done this for every flat tarp I have ever owned -- is to add a center-point pullout. For that I use a small grip clip such as those offered by Shelter Systems. The center point is useful for increasing headroom, especially in poor weather when you want most or all edges low to the ground or even pinned to the ground on the windward side. I recommend getting the 10'x10' size if you intend to sleep two persons. My wife and I use our tarp mostly as a dining fly (for 2 persons), so that we can eat away from our tent in bear country, protected from the weather. In rainy conditions, we may also set up or take down the tent under the tarp but normally use the tent in a separate location. I normally carry three or four lightweight stakes and two or three ounces of lightweight rope of various lengths (1' to 40') to facilitate more setup options.

Awesome shelter !
Used this tent for the first time bike packing. It is super light and packs smaller than a Nalgene. On the bikepacking trip I wasn’t sure how it would hold up so I brought a bivy to put under but was not necessary. I spent the whole night on top of bivy. From here on out only pad and bag under this and will use instead of tent. Could also be nice if you have a tent to have this elsewhere for a cooking shelter

Escapist Tarp
Great emergency tarp. Multiple setups a plus. Ultra light and durable. Only complaint is the very tight stuff sack. Had to change it out for a little larger one. Goes with me on every day hike in my pack, “just in case”. I am very satisfied overall with Sea to Summit gear.
