If pressed, we'd have to admit that mounting our bikes onto a hitch rack like RockyMounts SplitRail 2-Bike Hitch Rack gives us a sense of security few other racks can match. Our feathery carbon race builds are pretty easy to lock down on just about anything, but our burly enduro beasts carry a little more weight around their midsections, and we want to know they're mounted on something that can handle the heft.

RockyMounts brings a solid contender to the hitch mounted rack field. I've previously owned the Yakima HoldUp, and have used a buddy's Kuat NV quite a bit. The Splitrail is on par with both of those. Though having a claimed weight of 44lbs for the 2in receiver option, the rack feels lighter, and more balanced than the HoldUp which claims to be 39lbs.
It took me 30 minutes to install the Splitrail, and assembly is very straightforward and easy with the included hex wrenches. The hitch's fir system creates a very stable interface, with no wobble, but can be in issue if you're moving the rack from one car to another regularly. The rear handle for adjusting the position of the rack is also a strong point. The rack has ample clearance for 29 and 27+ tires. Though RockyMounts doesn't recommend it, I was bale to fit my fatbike with 4.8 tires onto the rack with a ski strap, but do so at my own peril.
The locking system is a weak point in my opinion compared to other offering. A cable extends from the arms, and a metal chuck locks into the end of the cable creating a loop. No rack's included lock/cable is very substantial, they're all there to keep people honest, but the Splitrail's system limits where you can loop the cable. If I were leaving bikes on the rack during an extended period of time, I'd use a thicker cable looped through the hitch like I have with my HoldUp.
Overall the Splitrail is a great rack, that's easy to use, and will get you and your bike to and from the trail with ease.
A new challenger
I've run the gamut of rack ownership over the last 10 years, I had a Thule T2, then upgraded (in my opinion) to a Yakima HoldUp. I moved the HoldUp over to my girlfriends car and have installed the SplitRail on my Tacoma about a month ago.
Like Sean's reviews below, all around an easy install, with them including all the necessary tools. Bikes are held securely, and you can offset the trays if you have clearance issues with bars/etc. I echo his sentiments on functionality of the rack, but will add my pro's and con's below.
Ability to add on one or two additional single trays on the 2in model allows you to customize your hauling as needed.
The biggest pro over the Thule and Yakima I have owned and Kuat's I have used is the lever to lower the rack. Its conveniently placed, and one handed in use. By far the best out there, hands down.
Most stable and solid rack I've owned.
One small, nitpicky con is the lack of ratchet on the rear wheel strap, but it's really not necessary, and functions very well without it
Lock system is a bit less streamlined like the thule/yakima post and hole lock setup, but the loop can be adjusted if needed.
I think the biggest downside, which a lot of folks will not need to worry about, is the trailer hitch install/fitment is more complicated. This results in a fantastic hold and is the most stable rack I've used (I'll say it as may times as needed!). However, if you need to move it between two vehicles, you will need to set up the hitch attachment again since some hitches have the pin hole in different locations.
In summary, this rack gets my vote and will stay on my truck, while my girlfriend will use the HoldUp. A great rack, I'm excited to see its long term durability.
Solid and Sophisiticated

A durable and functional hitch rack is an essential component for transporting your several thousand-dollar investments safely from place to place. There are many rack makers out there, but I have always admired Rocky Mounts styling and specifications. When word got out that the Split Rail was coming to market, I got really excited and picked one up. I can tell you straight up that this is the best rack I have ever owned and I was impressed by its ease of installation, build quality, and overall features.
-Installation: Right out of the box the rack needs to be assembled. Fortunately the folks at Rocky Mounts include great instructions and the tools to put it together. I had the rack unpacked and ride-ready in under 30 minutes!
- Build: This rack is stout. It's split rail design seems bombproof and the injection molded plastic is well made. The rack feels very solid and the anti-wobble wedge makes the rack very stable over rough roads and speed bumps.
-Features: Well thought out tray design that accommodates virtually any wheel size from 20" to 29" Plus. Integrated locks keep the bikes where I left them, and the ratchet closure system is typical of what is offered today. One feature I do appreciate is the small hook that holds the ratchet open when you are loading/unloading.
-Functions: As a two bike rack this is a perfect set up. The actuating lever is intuitively placed at the far end and it can easily be pulled to lift and stow, drop to load, or lean to access your back hatch (very important).
Overall, I would recommend this bike rack from Rocky Mounts to anyone who rides mountain or road and needs a solid system to protect and transports their beloved machines. Hit me up with any questions and I will be happy to provide additional specs.
