Make sure you don't go for an unwanted ride.

It's always a good idea to have Petzl's Ride Ice Axe in your ski pack when the route gets icy and steep. This ultralight, compact ice axe is an essential tool when crossing glaciers or climbing steep, icy peaks. Its steel head tapers down to a mere 3mm for easy penetration, and the shaft offers a slight curve and grip for easy handling. Petzl designed this axe with a short 45cm length and beveled head so you can pack it inside backpacks to further reduce risk of injury.

    Like its not there

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

At under 9 oz this thing is so light that you have no excuse to leave it behind. the size is a bit short for general mouintaineering but perfect for steep boot packs and ski mountaineering.

    Lightweight Functionality

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

The name of this axe is what it's all about: riding. This guy is small enough and light enough that you might as well take it on your ski tours; you're never going to notice it's there.

The slight bend in the shaft makes this a tool that is equally pack able and versatile. Easy to fit in the pack but if you have it on the outside its small footprint won't get hung up on anything. Then you have it when it's time to booting up couliors, get over head walls, or inspire confidence on a sketchy traverse.

Easy to pack, easy to hold, easy to use. Why not bring it?

Give me a shout to see what other gear I take on my tours.

    Between you and the light.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

    This tool is insanely light.

8.5 ounces = 0.5 lbs. Not even noticeable on your pack.

Until you need it. I even started to carry two of these styles of axes for more aggressive touring lines - they work great for ascending steep snow coulies or even at times - water ice.

This is the tool that will self arrest you in the event of a fall. Some people prefer a whippet - it's sixes in my eyes, and this thing has the versatility.

    Between you and the light.
