Pro Merino Wood Jersey Works Great

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 160lbs

Bought this to replace an old wool jersey that had worn out. This produce is a good example of the new advances in cold weather jersey design.

    Great Piece of Kit!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This paired with a base layer has been fantastic for the early fall mornings, where a jersey jacket combo would be a little to much, but a jersey with arm warmers doesn't quite do the trick. For me that is about the 45-60 degree range. For the 60s I am wearing it with a lightweight sleeveless baselayer. After that I wear it with the merino short sleeve baselayer and it has been great.
Fit wise I wear a a large in Rapha, Giordana, and an XL in Castelli and the large fit me great. Not too tight in the chest or shoulders, but snug on the wrists and arms so there isn't a ton of fabric catching the wind.
Definitely a key piece of kit to add for the early spring/fall kit, you won't be dissapointed!

    Wooly Warmth

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

Be aware that the fit in the jersey is standard/regular and not form fitting. With jersey sizing I usually float between medium and large and was very happy with the medium in this jersey.

With that out of the way, this is a great mid-layer for winter riding or a nice warm jersey for fall or spring weather. This jersey is a 60/40 blend of wool and nylon which prevents it from stretching out like other wool jersey's. For winter riding it pairs nicely with the PI PRO Amfib Shell (Item# PLZ00T2) and Merino Short-Sleeve Baselayer (Item# PLZ00SY).

What to wear at certain temperature ranges is very subjective but here is how I use it.

    60-45 degrees: jersey and baselayer.
45-30 degrees: shell, jersey, and baselayer.

For this review, it would be good to note that I tend to run hot compared to most people

    Initial impressions:
Like most of the items in their PRO line, Pearl has done a great job on this jersey. They have it fit in such a way that you can layer it or wear it on its own with just a baselayer and it will be equally as comfortable. The material is high quality and the stitching is sturdy. The three pockets on the back are stretchy enough to fit a bunch of gear if you need to pack gloves, a hat, some food, phone, etc.

This jacket fits me perfectly and doesn’t differ too much from other Pearl Izumi jackets. I didn’t feel like the arms were too long or that the jacket bunched up anywhere. Overall a very comfortable jacket.

    First Rides:
My first ride was 55 degrees and sunny. I wore this jacket with the Pearl Merino short sleeve baselayer. What was really surprising on that ride was how WARM this jacket really was. I ended up overheating during that ride and storing the baselayer because it got too hot for me. The next time I used this jacket however, it was about 38 degrees and windy. I paired it with both the AmFib jacket and the Merino baselayer from Pearl. That turned out to be a great combination. I was able to unzip the jackets while I was climbing to keep from overheating. On the descent, I found that I was very warm on my arms and in my core. Even though I was still sweating, the wool on the baselayer and the wicking action of the jacket did their jobs perfectly. The descent temperatures went down to 25 degrees. Everything I was wearing on my upper body stayed warm for the entire time.

    Overall impressions:
This jacket is a great jacket to wear on a colder day. It doesn’t pack up super well, but it can pack up in the rare case that you’d need to. It is versatile in that it fits slim enough to wear on its own and ride like a jersey or you can pair it with other items to create a full-blown coat. This makes it an ideal piece to have in your wardrobe for colder weather riding. It is one of my favorite jackets that I’ve tried on because it looks so good and is so comfortable at the same time. Pearl Izumi really has done a great job with this item!
