Total softy with a rugged exterior.

Like so many prairie folk in those old cowboy movies, the Patagonia Prairie Dawn Insulated Parka has a tough exterior that's just covering up how soft it is on the inside. Inspired by Patagonia's rugged workwear collection, this fleece-lined parka is made with a durable cotton canvas that cuts through frigid winter winds. On the body of the interior you've got high-pile shearling fleece to keep you toasty whether you're looking out on a frozen prairie or a snowy sidewalk. A longer drop-tail hem and insulated sleeves ensure that your whole body stays warm through the cold.

    • A durable canvas parka with comfortable fleece insulation
    • Organic cotton canvas is thick enough to cut through cold winds
    • High-pile shearling fleece offers soft-wearing and cozy warmth
    • Fleece-lined hood is adjustable for versatility and comfort
    • Drop-in handwarmer pockets hold valuables and chilly hands
    • Drop-tail hem falls below the knees for greater coverage

    Jacket Review

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: True to size

I gave this jacket as a gift and here is what the recipient had to say about it.

"Wore the jacket on the first really cold day of the fall/winter season in Wisconsin. Was super comfy and warm, and efficiently blocked the strong wind that day. Love the length and option to cinch the waist in for a more snug fit. Ordered the Large to allow for more room for layering underneath. All around very satisfied with this jacket and have work it almost daily since I got it."

    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: small
    • Height: 5'5"
    • Weight: 136lbs

I initially ordered a small in this jacket. (I'm a small in most brands except in OR I usually wear medium). Loved the jacket, I could tell it would fit my needs and be perfect for Montana winters. unfortunately it was super tight in the shoulders, chest, and short in the sleeves. I could only wear a t-shirt underneath and still felt restricted. Thankful to Backcountry for free shipping even on the returns! I am anxiously awaiting the size medium!
I gave 4-stars because despite the weird sizing it seems like a nice looking tough jacket!

    Great Coat

This is a great coat and I'm so pleased with it. It definitely keeps you warm on the chillier days. The fleece inside is so fuzzy and the exterior is sturdy and protective. The only thing I don't love about the coat is on the arms by the cuff: there are the two buttons and then a slit in the jacket. It mainly stays closed and protective, but with a sharp gust of wind, it's a little chilly.

    perfect for cold winters!

Love the fleece interior and the longer length. Definitely keeps me warm. I got the green and I really like that it doesn't look too industrial. It also cinches at the waist and the bottom which is a nice option if you want it more fitted. I got the small and still have plenty of room for another layer.

    LURVE. IT.

Had my eye on this coat for a while, and finally bit the bullet during a sale. It's everything I ever wanted it to be. Long enough to keep me cozy. Warm enough to withstand biting wind. Fashionable enough to wear pretty much wherever. I'm about 5' 6" and 150 lbs, went with a medium, and it's perfect. Fitted enough to be flattering, but loose enough that I can still fit a few layers underneath.

    LOVE MY NEW JACKET

I have absolutely no complaints about this jacket. I love the fit, the color and the fleece on the inside. It's functional and flattering. The insulation, fleece and length make it super warm and perfect for winter.

bought for my sister she says this:

"I LOVE it! The small fits perfect and is true to size. I Love the bear brown color because i can wear it with literally anything. It's so warm and I love the length because it keeps my butt and legs warm! I get compliments every time I wear it!"
    Enough Said.

I wear this jacket all of the time. I was looking for a casual, warm, non-puffy winter jacket land this fit the bill. It's REALLY warm and a great length to cover your rear and longer sweaters. There are double pockets - one pocket for your hands and another with a snap for your phone or wallet. (Genius.) I really like the brown, but it definitely has a Western rancher vibe, so if you're looking for something more geographically neutral, the green would be perfect.

    The Coat

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: XS
    • Height: 5'4"
    • Weight: 120lbs

This is the casual coat I've been wanting for SO long. The extra length really lends a lot of warmth and protects my booty from cold benches and car seats in the winter. I've worn it on light rainy afternoons and evenings here in the PNW and haven't had any issues. I wouldn't recommend it for heavy rain for any real length of time, but it definitely has some water resistance from the medium to heavy canvas and DWR coating. The hood is nice and deep without drowning my head and the elastic cord waist cinch is wonderful for avoiding that boxy look and lending some shape. I love it. I bought an XS for a slimmer fit. If you have longer arms, a size S might be better.

Picked up the Penfield Kasson initially for my wife, but it seemed to lack the casual aesthetic and feel. This is the perfect piece for her day in and day out. 60 grams of synthetic insulation can keep you warm to about 40 degrees with just a t shirt underneath. That amount of insulation in combination with the high pile fleece inner makes this a jacket you can use on most Winter days without the puffy jacket look. Easy fit and great color options.

i am obsessed with this jacket - it took me a while to pull the trigger but i am SO glad i finally did. This coat is sooo warm and cozy with the lining. Love the longer fit and adjustable drawcords to keep it snug or loose depending on how thick of layers you wear underneath.

    Cute but Runs Large

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: Small
    • Height: 5'2"

I find Patagonia sizing to be inconsistent. I bought this in a Small as I own other Patagonia items in a Small and this jacket in particular runs big. I should have exchanged it for an XS but removed the tags and wore it out before realizing how big it looked. I'll give it to my sister who will love it but make sure you size down.

    Great Looking, Comfortable Jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

I bought this jacket as a gift for my wife and it has quickly become one of her favorites. The fleece lining makes it very soft and warm, and even in the coldest climates up in the Pacific Northwest she can get away with wearing one base layer and this jacket and is very comfortable outside.

It fits true-to-size, and is the perfect length for her without feeling too bulky.

Incredibly cozy, great quality and cute.

You could definitely say I put this one through the ringer. I purchased this coat just before a 3 week long camping/road trip during late October. This jacket got me through some pretty cold nights in Wyoming and Montana. For two weeks we didn’t see a single night above freezing. On colder nights that dipped into the 20’s and teens I would put on a sweater or light down jacket underneath, but most of the time a beanie, gloves, and a buff around my neck were the only other accessories I wore with this jacket. The length kept my bottom and thighs warm. The material serves as a decent wind block. Its durable—

      Best Casual Jacket Ever!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I love this jacket! I bought it as a Fall to early Winter jacket and have been in love with it ever since. The sherpa lining keeps me warm and the canvas outer gives it a cool casual feel. I get a lot of compliments on it and have been very pleased with the fit. I am 5' 7", 140 lbs and bought a size small, it still has enough room to wear sweaters under it.

      Perfect Jacket!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I love this jacket! It is very comfortable and cute. I love the bear brown color way with the fleece hood, I do wish I had gone a size larger, the arms are a little snug. I know i won't be able to throw this jacket on over a sweatshirt. I am 5'5 135lbs. I was too excited when it arrived that i couldn't bear to send it back wait!

      Warm, stylish and casual cool.

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: Runs large
      • Size Bought: Large
      • Height: 6'0"

I'm loving this jacket. The industrial green is a great color that fits perfectly into my wardrobe. I'm 6ft tall and usually wear a women's size 14 and the large fits me well. I feel that the jacket runs a bit large. I like an XL nanopuff and XL Patagonia rain jacket, but an XL in this jacket was too big. If you are on the fence with which size to order, size down. I could use an extra half inch or so of sleeve length but I'm not complaining because I'm tall and sleeve length is always a problem of varying degrees. I get lots of compliments when I wear this jacket and the only reason that I don't give it a full 5 stars is that I wish it had a two way zipper! It would be so great to be able to unzip from the bottom up.

      In Love.

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size

I absolutely love this jacket. The green canvas is trendy and goes with everything and the sherpa lining is so cozy. It's warm without feeling bulky. I'm obsessed.

      I really love this coat!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: small
      • Height: 5'5"
      • Weight: 120lbs

I love the coat, the color, the material. It is very warm and I always get so many compliments. Im a 30DD, so I was nervous about getting a small but very glad I did. I am still able to where a sweater under the jacket and not feel constrained.

I got the saddle color and it is just my style! Would totally recommend (and do) to anyone that asks. Very happy.

      Feels like a Hug

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Large
      • Height: 5'4"
      • Weight: 158lbs

This jacket is a serious everyday jacket. Fit allows for plenty of room for layering. Fleece lining in the body feels like a hug. I love the dual pockets so you can carry stuff and warm your hands separately. Pockets and sleeves have more of a silky feel.
