A very versatile active layer

This thing rocks. Originally, I purchased this to do winter trail runs in, but have since used it to paddle, ice climb, mountain bike, backpack, and travel. I have found the Deviator to be one of the best if not the best light, active piece for me when it is chilly outside. The front/hood fabric has a good DWR and sheds light wind/rain well, while keeping just the right amount of heat in. I have found that it needs to be under 25F while running to keep myself from sweating, but with the other activities, I find it to be very comfortable in the 30-45F range (when I am moving), even if it is windy. The zippers are a little fragile, BUT it is meant to be a lightweight piece. I have found that being patient with and keeping the zippers clean and waxed go a long way. I am a Medium/Large and bought a medium, which worked for me well. Overall, I love this piece. While it is not a replacement for a puffy, It retains way more heat than I expected for such a light jacket, especially when moving.

Fantastic light jacket

So far I have only used this jacket for spring (alpine) skiing, at which it has been amazing! With temperatures in the low to mid 40s at the top this jacket, along with OR Trailbreaker pants and Gripper gloves, was warm enough, with just enough wind protection for riding the lifts and skiing fast, but breathable enough to prevent me from get sweaty and catching a chill. With temps below that I threw on an ultra-light softshell and was plenty warm. (Note that 1. I run warm when working hard and 2. I wear a hydration pack while skiing, without which it is possible my back would've been chilly sitting on the lift) And it fits (size S, I am 5'6" 145lbs) perfectly and looks great even just around town. So far one of my favorite items by OR (and I've got quite a few of them) Looking forward to using this for snowshoeing, cool weather hiking etc.!

A Very Different Type of Hoodie

I got this garment as a warranty replacement for another garment that is no longer available (thanks for honoring the spirit of your guarantee, OR!). The fit seems good (I'm trim and use a size M). One small downside is that the sleeves lack wrist closures which seems odd for a garment that has wind blocking nylon on its front. This nylon can be hard to see in colors other than the Topaz/Black garment - the blue fabic is wind-resistant nylon over an insulating layer). Be aware that the back and sides are made of a mesh fabric you can literally see through (the black fabric in the pix of the Topaz/Black garment). This should be fine for activities where there is little wind, where one is consistently traveling into the wind (via their own forward motion), or when an outer fully windproof shell will be used. It seems very breathable and comfortable for use in activities where a lot of heat will be generated (e.g. xc skiing, running, cycling). It offers good mobility and doesn't restrict arm movement. The other hoodies I have with similar characteristics are made from merino, which I love, but they lack abrasion resistance. I expect this garment to do better in that regard because it is synthetic. Fingers crossed. I'll probably use this as a general purpose hoodie more than was intended. As such it's a little "noisier" than other hoodies because of the nylon shell. I can't fault OR for that since they accurately describe it as intended for active heat-generating use (OR gave me a choice between this and another garment and I chose this one). It's a very different type of hoodie for me. I hope I continue to like it.

Surprisingly warm

Great product made of really nice materials. Only complaint is that I bought the next size up based on the fit and size chart and it actually fit more true to size so the sleeves are too long. Wish I had ordered my normal size.

Not quite like the old Deviator

Jacket is nice, and well made per usual with OR. But my two main gripes are; that I wish the hood fit tighter to be able to wear under a helmet more comfortably, and I wish there was a cinch around the bottom of the jacket. I honestly might take it to a tailor to get one put in. Y'all should've called it something different considering it's completely different and missing the basic features of the previous Deviator

Why havent you bought one yet

The absolutely perfect packable active layer. Packs down small but retains increadible warmth. Using it this year for baker and other routes. If your on the fence its worth the investment. It also looks great so if your limited on space like myself living in a camper its versatility of summit to dinner jacket is worth the space

Nice layer

I wore this over a thin base layer and it was perfect. Just enough warmth stretch and ventilation for the climbing.

I highly recommend this for the high performance days.

This is my go-to mid-layer for high output aerobic objectives on colder days when it isn't too windy. It is incredibly warm for how lightweight it is and dumps heat better than any other mid-layer I have tried over the years. The ventilation on the back is incredible and works great for the days when carrying a pack and skinning long approaches for virgin POW. A technical clothing masterpiece for this specific purpose!

Just the thing for moving fast in winter

This is the piece that I have been waiting for years for someone to make. It is the perfect amount of warmth and breathability to allow you to move fast in the winter. You kind of have to think of it as a wind-shedding fleece rather than a jacket. The attached hood is perfect, as you can pull it up to block wind and keep your head warm, and it is always handy (and doesn't have to be stowed like a hat). The mesh panels on the back and along the arms are just right for throwing off moisture, while the whole piece still provides protection from the wind. It is thin enough that you have to put on a full-on wind layer when you stop, but it's well worth it not to be all sweaty at the top.

Not to be underestimated!

I absolutely love this hoodie and have ordered more in other colors. I hesitated at first due to the high cost, but this is worth it. The design keeps the wind out but lets your back and arm pit breath while running or wearing a pack. The fit is intentionally slim-fit, as the product can keep you warm that way. Paired with a base layer this keeps me warm in temperatures just below freezing while running or hiking. If it gets cold, I just throw a soft shell over this and it's perfect. I highly recommend this.
