Osprey's Soelden 22 Backpack blends a clean, minimalist aesthetic with a fully-featured design tailored for backcountry touring. It's the smaller of the two Soelden Backpacks, and it can hold all the essentials for shorter tours like dawn patrols or quick jaunts up big mountains. The front panel delivers quick access to necessary avalanche gear like a probe and shovel, and the back access allows you to reach the main compartment with skis or a snowboard still strapped to the pack. Osprey fabricated it out of water-resistant materials with snow-shedding padding at the back, shoulder straps, and waist belt.

Chose Ortovox Cross Rider 22 instead
- Familiarity:
- I returned this product before using it
- Size Bought:
- Reg
- Height:
- 5' 8"
- Weight:
- 165
Ordered two packs, returned this one - so review is just based on inspecting the two in hand and reviewing features and organization. I did not use this pack in the field. I'm an Osprey fanboi so leaned towards this one, and have only ever had great experiences with their products. I found the Ortovox Cross Rider 22 to have basically the same features and setup with a few things I preferred. Both had back panel main access, a-frame and diagonal carry, ice axe loops, and a stashed helmet net. The Ortovox though had a cleaner and simpler implementations especially the diagonal carry - the Osprey seemed oriented towards snowboards - AND it had a hip pocket and access to the main panel from the front via a hybrid emergency pocket setup. All in all, the Ortovox was cleaner, lighter, and easier with the only plus for the Osprey being a goggle pocket and my faith in Osprey's quality and support. Went with the Orto and hope it lives up to quality and durability expectations.

Backside access only to main compartment
I was surprised to find once it arrived that the main compartment is only accessible through back panel access. The other aspects of the bag fit my needs, however this one feature was a deal breaker for me so I ended up returning in. Put top access on and its a great bag
