Polarized performance and inter-dimensional clarity.
For some of us, the Oakley Bottlecap, or the groundbreaking (for its dual lens interchangeability) Half Jacket was our very first pair of sports sunglasses. That was over ten years ago, and both styles can still be readily found in the retail sector -- this speaks a great deal to the universal fit and radical design. In regard to the Half Jacket, it excelled in fit and durability, but lacked somewhat in timelessness. This is why Oakley has seen fit to update the design with the Half Jacket 2.0 XL Polarized, while still presenting the same core fit and interchangeable lens functionality that made the original such a classic. From a design standpoint, most immediately apparent is how the 2.0 mixes the outwardly curved and slightly wider fit profile of the Half Jacket, with the more confident hinges and sculpted earstems of the recent Fast Jacket.
The Half Jacket 2.0 XL is available with a Oakley's excellent lens polarization. What makes Oakley polarizing different is that they figured out how to integrate the filter into their lenses without applying glue. Their competitors typically sandwich the filter between thin layers of lenses using clear glue. The glue is often the source of the slight distortion you experience when wearing some polarized glasses. Another plus of Oakley polarizing is they make both the right and left lenses at the same time and cut them out in parallel pieces so the filter lines up exactly the same way for both eyes. This is one less piece of optical information for your eyes and brain to adjust to: another reduction in eyestrain.
Like every Oakley design that leaves their Foothill Ranch factory, the Half Jacket 2.0 XL not only meets, but exceeds the rigorous standards set by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Granted, the worst that most of us will ever see is the occasional tree branch, or fast-flying insect, but Oakley still designs their lenses to withstand impacts as great as these, keeping your eyes protected wherever you ride.
What good would safety standards be without near-perfect clarity? Oakley's patented High Definition Optics (HDO) boasts some of the best clarity in the industry. These optically-correct lenses are constructed from pure Plutonite, Oakley's proprietary polycarbonate that not only blocks all harmful UV-A, UV-B, UV-C, and harmful blue light up to 400nm, but is also the heart of the impact resistance of which Oakley so proud. Each lens is finished with a hydrophobic treatment that repels moisture buildup from water or sweat, and contaminants like fingerprints or smudges from sunscreen.
The Polarized Half Jacket 2.0 XL is constructed from a super-lightweight O-Matter polycarbonate frame, and is available in three color options: Polished Black with Black Iridium lenses, Polished Rootbeer with Gold Iridium lenses, or Silver with G30 Iridium lenses. Iridium treated lenses pull double-duty: firstly, they protect the lens itself from scratches that could impact lens clarity, but more importantly, Iridium is Oakley's proprietary anti-glare treatment. Granted, polarization is the ultimate in glare reduction, but an Iridium lens is still designed to reduce glaring white light reflected off the road's surface, thereby lowering your risk for eyestrain. The Half Jacket 2.0 XL features a slightly larger and more angular lens profile than that of its little brother, so if you have a smaller face or like a more low-profile lens fit, you'll probably prefer the standard Half Jacket 2.0.

- Q & A
- Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
- Fit: True to size
I love Oakleys. This is my 4th pair. These are nice sunglasses, but I ordered the wrong ones, because apparently I can't read. So I will be returning them. And ordering the pair of Oakley I meant to order.
Oakley Half Jacket 2.0 XL
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
- Fit: Runs small
There is a reason Oakley has been making the half jacket this long. It works well and get the job done. I've like the small updates to the line. The frame feels lighter.
