Back of bottle
In this you can see the grooved rubber on the back (dark blue color) that helps you grip. The sides of the bottle have texture to help you grip too. Adjustable reflective strap in the middle.
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Let me start off by saying I'm new to running with a hand-held, so I don't have another hand-held to compare this to. Anyways, I'm not overly impressed with this and it took a month to get used to.
Let's start with the good. The actual little pouch/hand contraption is great. It's incredibly comfortable to hold. Infact, you don't even have to really hold the water bottle. The reflective strap is adjustable so it can be snug. The strap fits over a cushioned mesh part so it doesn't dig into your hand. None of the fabric on the holder gets caught up in the threads of the bottle lid area, and the holder is easy to get on/off of the bottle.
The pouch can fit keys, chapstick, tissues, gels, etc in it. I tried to fit my phone. Technically it does fit (large Motorola Droid turbo-similiar to samsung galaxy s6 size), but I feel like the seams could rip at any minute. I mean it's a big phone with a bulky case. If you had a smaller iPhone I think it would fit no problem. The bottom third of the pouch is a stretchy mesh so you could really fit a lot in there.
The not so good... The water bottle is ridiculous. I hate it but it's better than running without water. I only take this on runs longer than 8 miles because it's so annoying to drink out of. The max I'd run with this is a half marathon because then you'd want more water.
It took me a while to figure out but you absolutely have to hold the bottle upside down to drink from. It's not called "speed shot" for nothing because it feels like you are being sprayed with a water gun the water comes out so fast. Then when you hold it normal again, it makes obnoxious noise when it fills back up with air. Can't for the life of me get the last bit of water out.
If you try to drink this like a regular water bottle, you're in for a treat. First you'd have to squeeze all the air out of the bottle away from you, then you MIGHT be able to sip. This is not really a sipping kind of water bottle though, it's seriously like a jet stream. If you don't squeeze it before you drink, you'll get a huge mouth full of air followed by blasting water. Just craziness. Please drink it upside down.
As far as the insulation goes... It doesn't really keep water that cold. And then the water bottle sweats a lot so I don't even bother with ice. Let's end with a positive. The shape and texture of the water bottle makes it really easy to hold. On the long sides the plastic isn't slippery so your sweaty hands aren't sliding around. Then where your palm goes it's like grooved rubber. I am a small female and this isn't too big for me to grab. Also there is zero leaking so that's great.
So are there better out there? Most likely. Will I keep using this though? Yes, until I find a good hip belt.
