Durable for the alpine, stretchy for climbing.

The Mountain Hardwear Women's Chockstone Alpine Pant is a durable and stretchy softshell suitable for climbing in the alpine. Its smooth-face softshell fabric is surprisingly stretchy for how abrasion-resistant it is. Mountain Hardwear designed this pant with an active fit for full mobility, and articulated knees help you high-step without a problem. The fully adjustable waist ensures a snug fit regardless of how many layers you have underneath, and 1/4-length ankle zips slide over mountaineering boots with ease.

    Great Alpine Pants

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size

These are great alpine pants, both in terms of construction, and fit.

Fit: I'm a curvy lady, when I buy my jeans size in many outdoor brands they tend to run too small. This is not the case with Mountain Hardware, these fit true to size. The belt was a nice bonus because after a week in the mountains everything is a little baggier, so I can tighten the pants. Even with a 65lb pack and padded hip belt, these pants never rubbed or created any weird hot spots. They are roomy enough that you could wear thermal underwear underneath on a cold day. They fit easily over large mountain boots and crampons.

Activity: I used these pants on a 6 day alpine skills course in the North Cascades. They were a little warm on the approach, but perfect once I was on the glacier. On the approach we went through a lot of scratchy and thorny plants, my shirt snagged, but my pants never did. They protected me from snow and ice while I was practicing self arrest, and kept me warm while I was dangling in a crevasse. The inside of the leg is reinforced, so the pants never ripped when I snagged my crampons. They dried very quickly when they got wet, and I didn't mind sitting directly on snow in these too much. The thigh pocket is pretty deep so I didn't use it much because I didn't want stuff hanging down my knees, but is perfect anything that won't move much like gloves or a map. It was also useful to have a pocket I could still access easily when my harness was on, any time I was hanging accessing the waist pockets would be difficult. Unlike most women's pants the pockets are sized large enough to actually be functional so I could fit gloves or sunscreen inside when I wasn't wearing them. I was able to manage the zippers even with heavy gloves on.

Great Pant - Note About the Fit

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: Large

I exchanged before using but wanted to give a note about the fit for the ladies... I'm 5'9" and lanky, usually wear a 10 or 12 pants, so I got a large to layer under. The large was a little roomy in the waist, but they tightened up okay with the belt. The real reason for the exchange, though, was the weird "poof" at the hip area. I think MHW designed these pants for very curvy chicks. I have no shortage of hips and junk in the trunk (though my build definitely falls under "athletic") and the hips were still way poofy on me. That said, I tried on the men's mediums instead and they fit like a frickin GLOVE! So if you're a woman without a ton of curviness in the hips, consider trying out the men's version. They're pretty much identical save for the hips and these pants are awesome!

    Rain/Cold pant of choice!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: small

Light rain and humid cold weather doesn't stand a chance in these bad boys! Very comfortable fit, very sturdy make, high quality zippers, excellent adjustable waist band. Thigh pocket is awesome.
