    The Maxxis Assegai Wide Trail 3C/TR 29in Tire provides unrelenting cornering grip and confidence-inspiring control across a wide range of conditions ranging from loose and dusty to slick roots and rocks after a recent rainfall. It's Greg Minnaar's tire of choice for downhill racing and trail riding in all but the wettest, sloppiest mud encountered throughout the season, showcasing the Assegai's unbelievable grip and versatility. Greg looked at the design blueprints of both the Shorty and DHR in the making of this tire, creating one that bites tenaciously with its taller knobs and provides a lot of cornering support.

    It's available exclusively in 2.5-inch Wide Trail casing, which optimizes its tread spacing for aggressive trail riders and downhill racers running wider rims for better traction and cornering control at the absolute limit. Maxxis recommends running this 2.5-inch tire on rim widths of 30 to 35 millimeters, giving you the ability to drastically lower tire pressure to gain benefits of grip and compliance over rugged stretches of trail.

    The dual-ply downhill casing makes it up to the task of your favorite gravity riding disciplines, from lift-accessed park laps at the local resort to shuttle laps up the pass on the weekends. Maxxis 3C Maxx Grip compound uses the softest rubber compounds for superior grip and control when you're pushing things to the absolute limit on high-speed downhill runs. Additionally, it's tubeless-compatible, so you can securely seal them to the rim without any issues when you're riding hard and fast on downhill trails.

    Still pretty rad

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

    This tire is so rad that I decided to scrap all of my DHF tires.
    Pros: better traction - especially when you aren't turning the bike over that much. Seems to hold up better to sharp rocks.

    Cons: Heavier, doesn't roll quite as quickly.

    Big time grip has it's tradeoff's

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

    I traditionally run a DHR II as my rear tire of choice, but I couldn't find anything in a DH casing. So decided to give this a try. I took it for 1 test ride on some local singletrack, and was very underwhelmed. It felt slow, and the traction didn't seem any different than the DHR. If anything it was worse in the loose, sandy conditions I was riding in.
    Fast forward to riding in Vancouver & Whistler for several days of riding and I quickly discovered what this tire was designed for.
    I was really pleased with the traction, not only in corners, and braking but when I was just praying that I could hold onto traction on steep rock rolls these came through. They're very predictable all the way across the tread pattern and hold their grip whether you are upright or really leaning over into a turn.
    As others have mentioned you do pay a price for ultimate traction. This is one of the heaviest tires in its category. Also the Maxxgrip wears really quickly. A 2 week road trip of riding all day every day has already produced noticeable wear the nobs, but it still has plenty of life.
    All in all it's the perfect tire for it's intended use

    The trade-off of grip and wear

    These are awesome tires and I would absolutely buy again for the front wheel. Bomb proof and the traction is amazing. It will wear fast though! MaxxGrip is the real deal - crazy traction, crazy soft rubber, definitely fast wear. I would expect to go through ~2 sets if you are riding a ton in 1 season.

    Better than DHF

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

    Better grip throughout entire tread pattern from upright to on edge compared to DHF. Doesn't roll as quickly, but I'll take grip over rolling resistance any day.

    10/10 would buy again.
