Ride that rock with dry hands.

Mammut made its Rider Chalk Bag out of Cordura to keep it strong and resilient while you fight your way to the tops of crags, mountains, and peaks. Its thick fleece lining is sure to give you all the chalk you need for a dry, secure grip on holds. The drawcord closure keeps it tightly closed so chalk doesn't snow down on your belayer, and two suspension points give you a secure fit when you pair this bag with the included waistband. A handy brush holder makes it easy for you clean up any over-chalked hold, and the zippered compartment stores your tape so you don't have to finish the rest of multipitches with torn-up fingers for lack of protection.

Pros and Cons

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

As my first chalk bag, I spent some time looking into different sizes and decided that the Mammut Rider bag would be the best for medium to large sized hands, and this worked great for me as it is not too large and not too small (if you have larger hands you may find some problems with fitting you hand into the opening). The only reason I gave this product 3 stars instead of 5 is that after only 2 weeks of light use and careful storage (my first chalk bag needs some TLC, right?) I noticed all the chalk had vanished, but the weight of it was still present. I found a 2 1/2 - 3 inch rip in the seam of the lining of the bag, and all the chalk had fell through. This is why I gave it 3 out of 5 stars.

With that being said......I had an awesome experience with Backcountry employees in regard to replacing the chalk bag. They were incredibly helpful, got a new one shipped out VERY fast, and I honestly enjoyed working with the company. I am a fairly new Backcountry fan, but I can honestly say that I am very impressed and have nothing but positive things to say in how this item was replaced and how awesome the staff was. if you're reading this and are a potential new customer to Backcountry, but not sure if you should buy from them, go for it! Thank you Backcountry for the help and support....and slowly taking all my money :)

Good chalk bag

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

It is a small chalk bag but it works. It’s well constructed and seems to be good quality. It doesn’t close all the way but it is a non issue for me. The zippered pocket is small enough for a ring or maybe a key but that’s it. Good choice if you’re looking for a small chalk bag.

Good bag for $

Nice chalk bag for medium sized hands. Closure does not close 100% and will leak a little chalk but not much. Belt and brush holder are nice, zipper pocket wide enough to fit a credit card.

Manages to hold chalk

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Well, it holds chalk. So pretty much guaranteed to make five stars. I grant stars on products holding up to reasonable expected use, and this has managed to hold chalk for many climbs. I use the pocket for a roll of medical tape and my wedding ring, haven't lost either. The brush holder holds the expected toothbrush sized brush (haven't tried anything else). I have large hands and they fit into it well. I only use pretty chunky loose chalk, so I can't speak to using it with a chalk ball, but works very well with the loose stuff. The included belt works around my waist or closing it in around my backpack to carry it and my shoes on the bus going to work or the gym/crag.

Works well but small

The closure and pocket are nice on this bag, but it's best for smaller hands. I consider my hands pretty average and sometimes it is a struggle. Might pass it on to a smaller friend and get something different.

Its a chalk bag

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought this about 10 months ago and use it about 3 or 4 times a week. There are a couple things about this bag, 1. Its small. If you have medium to large hands then you might be fighting with this bag a bit the get the amount of chalk on your hand you want. 2. The drawcord often gets stuck and i have to wiggle it around to re seal my chalk bag.

On the plus side it has a nice compartment on the side with a zipper you can place a toothbrush in or a ring, bracelet or necklace. Next chalk bag I purchase I think will be a little bit larger for my large hands.

Everything you need for sweaty climbing

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Now there isnt much to a chalk bag, after all it is just a bag right? I like this one because it has a nice little pocket on the outside and a big ol' fleece liner. The cord is very user friendly and easy to cinch shut when I dont need to access my chalk. I also like how the bright red sticks out among the chalk bags at the climbing gym. As someone who has lost a couple chalk bags this way its a great feature. This is a great item to have for when the sun starts warming the granite up.

Everything you need for sweaty climbing

does the trick

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

the fleece lining on the inside is pretty dope, its a little small for my hands (which are a medium/large in latex gloves) with the chalk sock by metolius but I can still get my them covered just fine. got it in red and the kids seem to love it. the little pocket is good to have too, I keep a couple bucks in there for an emergency drink at the gym. seems like it should hold up well too.

my only gripe is that I cant get it to close all the way so theres a little 1/2 inch opening at the top but it still keeps most everything in as long as you don't jump on it.

Looks Rad, My Hands Love It

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I ordered the red bag, it looks sick! I've used it a handful of times at the bouldering gym. It serves it purpose well, I carry a chalk ball in it right now and seem to have good room to get my hands in the bag. I do have slim/skinny hands so I think it could be a problem if you hands are bigger. I like the little zipper pocket, I usually throw my ring in there while I climb.

It holds chalk like no other!

This chalk bag looks great! it is also pretty durable and as said before, it does its job in holding chalk. I like the zippered pocket that is on the side. I don't actually put anything in it but if i needed to I would have a pocket to use! It also has a small pocket for a brush. The only gripe I have for this bag is unlike many bags made by prAna, it does not have a huge amount of room to put your whole hand in and get every crevice of your hand covered in chalk.

Are chalk bags universally compatible with harnesses? I've got a Black Diamond harness my wife uses, and I want to make sure this will fit.

Can you fit a cell phone in the pocket?

    Best Answer

With how massive most modern smart phones are these days I don't think one of those would fit in the zipped compartment. Maybe an older flip phone would.

The pocket isn't big enough to hold a phone, even an old flip phone. It has a key clip, but a hefty key set would be a tight fit.

If you want a bag with a cell-phone pocket, check out the Mad Rock Kangaroo. Big enough to hold even a recent phone.
