    Trek on.

While your Mom's vintage and fairly large external frame pack might hold some element of sentimental value, it does smell a whole lot like mouse urine after having been stored in the attic all these years. Lucky for you, the folks over at Kelty have revamped their trail-hardy and classically styled external frame Yukon 48 Backpack. Constructed with a smaller scaffolding system, the Yukon is ideal for teens and smaller-framed adults—consider it the happy medium between an adult's pack and child-sized knapsack, which is awfully convenient for those who prefer to escape the notorious hot-spots and major camp discomforts that an oversized pack often elicits.

Specifically speaking, the Yukon is equipped with a lightweight aluminum frame that provides structure and stability and the adjustable suspension straps disperse the weight of your load with ease while the padded shoulder straps, dual-density foam waistbelt, and load lifter and belt stabilizer straps ensures an element of down-home comfort. Not to mention, the Yukon is endowed with a vast multiplicity of storage pockets ranging from its generous main compartment to a dual-use laptop or hydration sleeve—so however tempting it may be, we'd just recommend leaving "War and Peace" at home for a rainy day. The gear loops, ice-axe or trekking pole carry, as well as a sternum strap seals the deal on having a grand ole time.

Nice pack reminiscent of the old days.

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I am a male with an athletic build at 150 pounds, 5' 9" tall. As always I fall right between Medium and Large on the size scale. Same with these packs. I always liked an external frame pack and was brought into backpacking as a 17 year old. I used a Kelty "Basic" which was excellent and rugged. It carried everything that I needed efficiently and so does the Yukon. I had to adjust the Yukon up to max size 19" for me and it still did not fit right due to the Mesh Band being too high on my back. I would recommend this pack for women and teen aged boys. Anyone over about 5' 8", I'd recommend the Trekker. I actually bought a Trekker as well and found the frame to be a much better fit for me as I fell right in the middle of the size range. I like the Yukon pack bag size and color better, so I have put that bag on the Trekker frame and it fits fine. I can always switch to the larger Trekker bag, if I need it. It only takes a few minutes and 4 pins to swap them out. One note: the color on these is a blueish, teal green, not a natural green like you'd find in the woods. I hope to see you in the woods. I'll be the guy with the Yukon-Trekker. JCW
