Why We Like The Mountaineering OTC Extra Cushion Sock
When other hikers start turning back, you keep going strong in comfort with the help of the Darn Tough Mountaineering Over-The-Calf Extra Cushion Sock. This sock features a heavyweight merino wool blend and thick cushioning to help you laugh in the face of icy winds, sideways sleet, and treacherous terrain.
Unlike other socks built for extreme weather, this one features Darn Tough's streamlined performance fit so it still fits comfortably in your boot. Merino wool regulates temperature to maintain comfort from the trailhead to the peak, nylon adds durability, and Lycra maintains stretch and recovery so the fit doesn't fade over time. This sock also features Darn Tough's thickest, highest-density cushioning to ease impacts from rugged terrain and ease the burden of fully-loaded packs.

Great sock for all your needs
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
- Size Bought:
- Medium
- Height:
- 5' 7"
- Weight:
- 155
I originally bought these socks with the intent of using them for back country skiing and mountaineering, but because of how nice these socks are I've been wearing them almost every day. They performed very well at 35 degrees while crosscounty skiing, flexed well, kept my feet warm but not toasting, and the best part, No smell whatsoever. I've worn these without washing them almost consistently for about 6 days without smell (gross, I know). About the only complaint I could come up with is the fit of these socks. I'm about a 8.5 men's and ordered medium which says it covers feet sized 8 to 9.5 . There's a noticable amount of extra sock at the end. I can normally pull the sock up a little higher but then the heel part doesn't sit quite right. It also occasionally slides down my shins but these are very picky things and I normally don't notice these things much throughout the day. If you think you may be bothered by this then I'd maybe recommend you buy a size down if you are like me at the middle to lower range of your suggested size. All in all this is a great sock and I will be wearing these a lot. I can't comment on durability yet since it has only been a week since I got them but considering they have a lifetime no questions asked warray, I'm not too concerned. I will update this review after I really get some use into these.

Declining quality
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
- Size Bought:
- Large
- Height:
- 5' 10"
- Weight:
- 163
My second pair of Darn Tough OTC Mountaineering socks and the quality has declined dramatically. The first pair has a much thicker foot sole which is entirely red. These are red on the toe and heel and are so thin that it affects boot sizing. My first pair weighs 175 grams after many washings. The new pair weighs only 160 grams after the first wash.
