Great pants for the price
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
- Fit: True to size
- Size Bought: L
- Height: 5'9"
- Weight: 155lbs
These are a very decent rain pant at a very decent price. They're not super high end but neither is the price point, and for my purposes they do great!
Not the most flattering pants in the world, but they're elastic waist rain pants so their goodness lies more in their function than fashion. That said, I love the fit and the length! I'm 5'9" and leggy and the size L fits just right. The waist has a lot of stretch but isn't tight so they stay put with no tourniquet action, and the length is perfect for me.
They pack down super tiny which is awesome. Here in Oregon, it can be go from zero to pouring at any second, so it's nice that I can stash them in my backpack whenever. They're great for walking the dogs on rainy days or when the drops start to fall while I'm out hiking. If I wanted something truly waterPROOF, I'd shell out for gore-tex or wear the plastic pants, but these have a ton of water resistance and are nice and breathable so you don't feel like you're wearing plastic wrap.
My only real complaint is that though they have an expandable width hem at the bottom, there's no zipper so if you have clompy boots on, they're really hard to get off over the boots.
The Price is Right
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
- Fit: True to size
- Size Bought: Large
- Height: 5'6"
- Weight: 175lbs
I use these for my scooter commute in the Seattle rain. So far they have kept me dry even in a couple of absolute downpours. As mentioned by other these are pretty thin and I would be concerned about ripping in an abrasive environment. They have not insulation so at times I think they are leaking but really it's just the cold. They have been fine for my short walks but I doubt how comfortable they would be for an extended period of time. I have a big butt and wear a size 12 in pants, I purchased a large and they over my jeans with no issue.
They work, but they're flimsy
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
- Fit: Runs large
These are very light weight which made them great for travel but they're not sturdy. Not great for rocky areas, it doesn't take much for it to tear and after sliding down one boulder the butt of it was torn to pieces. It served me very well for one 6 week kayaking/camping trip where I had to pack incredibly light, and a few times after that. They really do roll down very small and they kept me dry. I wouldn't recommend them for rocky areas or off-trail hiking, but they might be perfect for backpacking or camping when you don't have room to spare but want a reliable rainpant on hand.
If you're going to be climbing or crawling through rocky areas or brush that snags and grabs these are a no; if you need a light, breathable rainpant for maintained trail hikes or an easy-to-pack pant for a back-up these are great.
I will say these are not flattering, at all. I have a curvy, hippy hispanic body with, ahem, ample hips and junk in the trunk. But these were baggy in the hips and butt even on me. Yet the legs were almost too short. It's definitely a strange fit.
Flimsy, but keep you dry
These keep me dry in the rain and snow, but are not very breathable. I went on a hike and upon finishing I noticed they had ripped in the back (I did not encounter thorns or sharp sticks, and they fit loosely/ are not at all tight anywhere)
Columbia Storm Surge Pant weathers the storm
Wife delivers mail for a living. Where we live, this means getting rained on frequenty. She wore these in the rain on 12/23 and 12/27 and kept dry as a bone!
Lightweight, and breatheable, didn't make her sweat when walking the route. Pants plenty long enough for a 5' 6" woman, too.
Awesome Pants - Incredible price.
I bought this pants to go skiing. I didnt have enough budget to buy the proper ones. So I put them on top of several layers and they worked like a charm. I was dry all day.
They will do an amazing job if they are used under the rain.
Did I mention the incredible price????
5 STARSSSS FOR SURE!
For the short and pear-shaped
The sizing on these is really weird. I am 5'11" and a size 6. I ordered the medium and they were so short they were basically like capri pants. Additionally, the waist was too tight, but the hips and thighs were too big. If you are short and pear-shaped, these are great, otherwise don't be sucked in by the good price.
Great rain pants!
These pants were a great deal. I was unsure of their quality because they were so much less expensive than the other brands I looked at. But, I use them everyday on my rainy bike ride to school and they do a great job keeping me dry. I love how they dry so quickly after my bike rides as well. They get the job done!

I am very short (a shade under 5 foot) so waterproof pants are always way too long. Which pants do not have zippers/velcro bottoms so they can be hemmed?

Pockets? Inseam measurements? Why don't you post adequate product description?
To the right under "Select Options" it says "Size?" Click on that for your inseam.. however on Columbia's site is says the inseam is 31". You can blame columbia for lack of info on pockets, as they don't specify on their site either which is where there is no excuse for lack of information. Judging by front/rear pictures though I'd say no pockets.
From Columbia -
"When the storm surges, youll be ready. Built to handle the worst of wet conditions, these waterproof-breathable pants feature an Omni-Tech® exterior for the ultimate protection.
Lightweight mesh lining wicks moisture away from your body without adding bulk and a drawcord at the waist cinches tight to ensure that they stay put, even when youre on the move. Authentic fit."
Shell: 100% nylon FD LTX. Lining: 57% recycled polyester/43% polyester mesh
Fully seam sealed
this is a rain shell pant, designed for lightweight packability. There are no bagged pockets however there are through pockets, allowing access to the pockets of shorts or pants under this pant.
Update: I have the new ones (bought in 2015) and they do not have through pockets; they do have one internal pocket at the waist (key or phone - not a full sized pocket).
