A snug but non-restrictive waist and leg loop fit is key so the tie-in point stays aligned with your hips during falls. Look for rise geometry that prevents upward riding, adjustable leg loops (double-back or auto buckles) to fit shorts or insulated pants, and lumbar padding for lower-back stability.

Durability comes from robust materials like nylon split-webbing, reinforced belay loops, and padded foam in the waist and legs. Thick padding and heavy-duty gear loops handle repeated hangs and rack hauling, and a reinforced belay loop rated to 15 kN adds static strength.

Plan for at least four gear loops to carry a full trad rack, with more loops if you haul extra placements frequently. If you climb winter or mixed routes, one to two ice clipper slots plus a strong rear haul loop make organizing tools and pulling rope much easier.

Lightweight models can feel less cushioned on extended belays compared with bulkier options; the Petzl SITTA at 9–10 oz emphasizes low weight and speed. If you prioritize hang comfort and padding for long multi-pitch days, heavier, padded designs such as the Metolius Safe Tech (around 15 oz) or Mammut Ophir 3 (14.8 oz) offer more support.
