Blue Rafts

Recreational rafts are designed for flat water and prioritize ease of use and affordability, so they’re a great choice for lakes and slow rivers. Models like the NRS High Five (9 feet 10 inches) offer simple, stable platforms built from common PVC construction, making them easy to paddle and maintain.

For paddle trips on Class II–IV rapids, a standard 14-foot raft that carries six paddlers plus a guide is a common choice because it balances maneuverability with capacity. Look for features like three thwarts for added stability and a self-bailing floor to shed water quickly through drain holes during rapids.

Urethane is the most durable option, offering superior puncture and tear resistance as well as lighter weight—it's often preferred where rocks and abrasion are a concern. PVC still provides solid durability for recreational use and can be more economical, while reinforced multi-chamber construction adds safety on whitewater.

Packrafts are ultralight, portable kayaks made for backcountry access and can be carried overland to remote waterways without much bulk. Many modern packrafts include stow zippers that let you stash gear inside the tube and lower the center of gravity, which improves performance on technical whitewater despite their compact size.

Fishing-specific rafts often include integrated rod holders, tackle storage, and configurations that keep gear accessible and stable on flat water. Sealed floors are common on these boats for economy and dry storage, but be aware they usually require manual bailing rather than self-draining; brands like Tributary offer layouts tailored for angling.
