Think about where you ride most: all-mountain powder skis blend versatility for varied days, while pure powder skis prioritize flotation and maneuverability for deep, untracked snow. Backcountry touring skis are built to pair with compatible bindings for uphill efficiency and downhill control.

If you ski the East, narrower powder skis around 95–105mm (some east models are as slim as 98mm) offer better maneuverability and hardpack performance. For deep western powder look toward 115–125mm or wider to maximize floatation, and keep in mind skis should measure at least 90mm underfoot for adequate float.

Rocker profile directly changes how a ski rides in soft snow: tip and tail rocker improve floatation and make turn initiation easier in deep powder. However, those same rocker shapes can feel less stable when snow gets choppy, while reverse sidecut designs can handle heavier Pacific Northwest snow better.

For uphill efficiency weight matters—alpine-style rippers can weigh about 3,600 grams per pair for maximum downhill control, while lightweight touring boots near 1,800 grams per pair give more range of motion in walk mode. Choosing lighter skis and boots will reduce fatigue on long ascents but may trade off some downhill precision.

Adjustable bindings that switch between tour and ski modes are essential for most backcountry setups, since they provide climb-friendly range of motion and secure downhill lock for descents. Splitboards are an alternative for riders who prefer board-style travel and want a climb-capable option without alpine touring bindings.
