Black Plates & Bowls

For ultralight hikes favor silicone or thin plastic pieces that weigh under 3 ounces, like the Frontier UL bowl or Sea to Summit X-Plate at about 3.2 ounces. Choose items that pack flat or nest so you keep bulk to a minimum without sacrificing basic durability.

Stainless steel and enamelware stand up best to rough use; models like the GSI Glacier Deep Plate handle dents and repeated use. Enamelware from brands like Coleman offers chip-resistant, budget-friendly options when weight isn’t the main concern.

If you plan to eat a lot of soups, pick deeper plates or bowls—GSI’s deep models or 10-inch steel plates give extra volume for stews. For solo or ultralight trips, a 400mL titanium or collapsible bowl balances portion size and minimal weight.

Many silicone bowls carry temperature ratings up to 500°F, so they’re fine for hot food and working near cookware like stoves. Still, verify the specific product rating before direct contact with open flame and rely on food-grade silicone items for safety.

Nesting kits, such as the UCO 6-Piece Mess Kit and cylindrical mess kits that tuck into pots, consolidate utensils and plates into one compact bundle. Collapsible bowls that flatten to about 0.5 inches and nestable titanium sets like Snow Peak’s 400mL Ti-Double (around 2.5 ounces) free up a surprising amount of pack space.
