Thinner gels like High N Dry give precise application and soak-in waterproofing, while powders or desiccants are better for drying already-soaked CDC or emergers.

Powder desiccants trap air and dry fibers quickly, which keeps fragile CDC and small dries afloat without matting. Frog's Fanny and similar powders excel at repeated casts in wet conditions because they absorb moisture rather than just coating the surface.

Liquids are great for quick treatments on hair and synthetic patterns and are simple to apply in the field from a bottle. If you need extreme longevity for an entire outing, consider a desiccant or a high-performance product like Fly-Agra after fully drying the fly.

Aquel is noted for resisting viscosity changes so it stays workable in colder conditions, while Lochsa is an eco-friendly, clear gel that performs well on a range of dries. Both types offer better control than bulky pastes and are less likely to mat hackle or hair when applied properly.

Match the applicator to the job: use a thin gel from a tube or brush for spot treatments on wings and bodies, and use powders with a brush for delicate CDC fibers. Bottles and liquids are convenient for broad, quick coverage, while shake-and-bake desiccants dry and coat at the same time for soaked flies.
