Orange Compasses

For hiking and backpacking, a baseplate or mirrored baseplate compass is ideal because the transparent acrylic or polycarbonate base makes map reading and bearings easy. Models like the Suunto MC-2 add a clinometer and 2-degree accuracy for more precise route-finding without adding much weight (many baseplates sit around 1–2 ounces).

Thumb compasses that fit on your thumb are built for hands-free use and quick bearing checks while moving, which is perfect for orienteering or trail races. Pick a low-profile, lightweight design with a clear capsule and quick-settling liquid damping so the needle stabilizes fast during motion.

Marine compasses often use fixed needles and rotating cards and are built to handle turbulent waters, with some models carrying IPX7 ratings for submersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. Also look for liquid-damped capsules and sturdy housings so the needle stays stable in chop and heavy motion.

An adjustable declination is a worthwhile feature for accurate bearings in varied terrain, while a clinometer helps with slope assessments and route planning. For example, sighting compasses like the Suunto MC-2 offer a clinometer and precise readings useful when you need slope angles up to 60 degrees.

Seek a compact thumb compass with a secure strap or low-profile mount and a clear, readable dial so you can glance at bearings without slowing down. Favor liquid-damped capsules and jeweled bearings for fast settling times under 2 seconds and reliable needle performance during races.
