Great purchase for route development
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
After having to come up with innovative and complicated gear placements to keep myself in place for bolting my first route, I bought a pair of these. Much better than hooking nuts around corners. May not be the standard use but they work great but I might need to look into other, smaller hooks as well.
Save Those Arms
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Since I don't (yet) have adjustable daisies, the Fifi hook is indispensable when aiding an overhang. I clip my ladder, step onto it, fifi onto a step, then adjust my normal daisy and hang away. Without the hook, a lot of energy is wasted if you have to hold yourself up to adjust a looped daisy.
When you need it, you really need it.
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
Ice climbing is really just a silly version of aid climbing on ice, but I love it. Every now and then the fifi hook comes in really handy (and necessary...) There have been just a few times when I've needed the hook while being only half way to the top of some vertical ice, pumped out of my mind, and looking desperately (and in vain) for a rest. The fifi hook is your best friend at that moment. Sink your tool good and deep, clip your fifi into your belay biner, and hook yourself to your new anchor. It gives you just enough of a rest to be able to either put in a screw while hanging, or just recoup for the rest of your climb. Now, I'm not telling you that this is a version of clean ice climbing, so don't go yapping to your friends how you slowly snuck your way to the top of the 100 meter ice fall using your fifi hook.. They won't care. This is just a great way of staying safe when you are just a little out of your comfort zone.
Nice and light. stays hooked on gear the way it should. The sling is a little on the long side and can be a pain to fiddle with at times.
these are a nice fi fi. they are lighter than other hooks out there and its just plain convenient that they come pre slung with sewn 9/16 webbing, saves a lot of trouble with messy water knots and trying to guess the right length. many believe that these are slung too long but if you do a little research i think youll find that most people want thier fifis shorter than what is truly proper. plus, would BD get it wrong? i for one an fine with admitting that they probably know better than i do on some if not all things. nice little fifi, im in.
Not just a poodle name!!!
They call you Fi Fi, why I'm not sure
But in my heart you will always endure
You my secret weapon when I climb with speed
Oh FiFi, Oh FiFi, your useful indeed.
For top stepping to reach a fare off piece
And then being able to quickly release
There's no comparing you to a simple biner
Your less manly sounding, but meaner and leaner.
So Fi Fi, my sweet, this poem is for you
To my heart you'll always be true.
From hard aid climbing, to napping on lead
Your the the tool that gives me godspeed.
BD Fifi hook
The Fifi is a great way to hook into your pro while aiding, theonly problem I have with it is that I think the sling it is build with is too long. When stepping up it will un-hook itself. But if you are not too gumbyish you can avoid this. As far as rapping off it, that is maddness. It would serve better as a keychain.
Response to Canyoneering
In no disrespect to Canyoneering....rapping off a fifi hook is a really bad idea. A fifi is designed as a quick and fast way to attach yourself to a bite of webbing or a Daisy Chain. It's not designed to hook into rock! You would be much better off using what used to be called a 'bat hook,' now known as a 'Cliffhanger'
And frankly as a climber with 20 years under my belt - I would only rap off any hook as a last resort - It's a good way to end up dead.
This thing sees a lot more use than I thought it would. I keep it with me while I am climbing and ends up hanging me from gear while I am trad climbing or doing a project. I like the Petzl hook better though, seems lighter but doesnt come with the sling.
does this come with 5 or is it just 1
Definitely a confusing picture. It is for a single Fifi hook.
