    New Apex Pad

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

So this is the new thermarest pad and while I have not tested it in the field yet I figured I’d leave a preliminary review for any thru hikers about to start the season.

Pad came in an easy to compression sack. I was able to roll it out without issue and did blow it up by mouth for the first use. I would recommend this and leave it inflated for a bit to help break it in.

It was very comfortable and was not noisy like the pure inflatable pads. They do offer a wide version now however I got the regular size and fit well. If you’re bigger or concerned about your elbows be off the edge then I’d recommend the wide. It’s not much more expensive.
The pad deflated well, it was a bit tricky to deflate as the pad wants to obviously re-inflate while the valve is open. So it requires some application of force. I find it easiest to roll it up once to get the air out then roll again to get it tight. It fit easily back into the compression sac.

Overall given the increased R value with this new pad I’m expecting it to work well in all 4 seasons. I deliberated a lot over the purchase given that’s its new and lacks reviews, however I’m very pleased after resting on the pad for a bit. I’m also pleased with the weight of pad and the size when back in compression sac.

Would really recommend for those looking for a comfortable option with a decent R value, but not the noise of a true inflatable pad. Obviously you sarifice some space in your pack in comparison. As I stated above I haven’t given it a true field test yet but I’m expecting a great performance.
