Great College Backpack

Purchased for college student. Love the supportive structure, separate laptop compartment, and all the space.

They don't make them like they used to

I had my north face borealis backpack for about 15 years and used it almost every day. Other than some normal fading, the backpack stayed in great shape. I decided to "upgrade" to the this pack, and within 6months the stitching on the backpack strap began to separate (see picture). I would like to think this is a fluke but I think clearly the quality of north face has declined tremendously.

Design limits how much fits inside

I have an older Surge that allows me to see what's in each department. I bought a new Surge in April 2024 and returned it. It has the same number of zipper compartments but the design does not allow me fit as much in the compartments as my older Surge. I had to return it.

I would purchase again and recommend.

I like this bag. It is comfortable and fits everything I need. I went on a recent trip with it. It does run a bit big, but it still fit underneath the seat in front even the small ones. Great every day bag that can be used in many other circumstances

10/10

Just got hit by a car, but I turned my back to the car at the last second. This bag protected my spine, 10/10 would get hit by a car wearing this backpack again.

"done with North Face backpacks" is WRONG

worst great for 15+ years. "does with..." is wrong. Look up the ever goods bag and its not even the same. Sounds like a corolla driver who buys a F150 and then complains about "the big square storage in the back, and why there is no trunk". What a buffoon

done with northface backpacks.

i have a quite a few older models of NF back packs, including a 2008 jester and 2010 surge. i got the new surge to switch things up a little and i hate it. already donated. in order to use it for a trip, i had to modify it by removing the rearmost divider so i could make the largest compartment functional. while it increased the usable capacity of the bag quite a bit, 31 liters is laughable. maybe more like 25 on a good day. what bothered me most while traveling was that completely unnecessary and oversized plastic board in the back. i did not know this was in it and not removable, or i would have avoided altogether. it restricts interior capacity, digs into my back, and causes the bag to tip forward while sitting, even with trying to pack the front base of the bag as support. i tried to take it out (i do a lot of sewing and could re-mend it) but it is literally sewn into the bag. UGH. since my 2010 version is amazing and still going strong, my husband now uses it and i have upgraded to an evergoods bag, which i LOVE (AND the plastic brace is removable!) northface- chill out on all the unnecessary pockets and frill and focus on durability. get back to your roots. peace out.

I would absolutely buy this and recommend to anyone!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Great backpack. Coming from the smaller Jester, this thing is massive. It's also far more comfortable, I use this backpack for daily use. The last one I had lasted just over 15 years- this one should last for 20. Great build quality for sure!
