    Love these pants

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: M/M
    • Height: 6'1"
    • Weight: 175lbs

I wore these pants pretty much non-stop every day for a month walking the GR 653 (Chemin d’Arles) across France. Any and all conditions - heat wave, rain, wind, steep climbs across the Haut-Languedoc and Pyrenees mountains, through wet brush, dry brush, you name it, these pants saw it. The slightly looser fit is perfect for challenging hikes, the pockets are fantastic, the leg zippers and color coded convertible zips made it super easy to take advantage of their versatility, and they dry super fast - making it easy to rinse or wash them off when the day is done and have them ready for action the next day or a few hours later if some sun is available.

After all that these pants are showing no signs of wear. Oh, and did I mention they are really comfortable? Yes, they are. Get a pair if you have some serious hiking planned - or even if you don’t.

    I'm Not Like Everyone Else

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Size Bought: M Long

I enjoy a little extra room in my pants. Plus it's sexy to be cool & comfortable.
Use the Size Chart, [next to "Select a Size"] to guide the measure to guarantee your desired fit (the pant's inseam is the most important part).

+ there's a "built in belt" that'll keep you nice & tight w/ a buckle that easily snaps in & out (you'll see what I mean).
then there's so much room in these pockets: I stash a book in the back, money/credentials in the front left zipper, & secure easy access to stuff on the right thigh.

Honestly these pants have so many quirks you'll notice l8r, I love em
& you'll look great in them

I'm sure they work, but way bulky

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: M Short
    • Height: 5'8"
    • Weight: 165lbs

Returned two different sizes and gave up on this one. Second pair seemed to fit great, until I turned around. Both sizes I tried were like parachutes in the back.

Liked everything else about them (without actually wearing them on the trail,) but couldn't get over the excess material.

    Nice Pants

    • Height: 5'11"
    • Weight: 195lbs

Fits extremely large. Bought a large but the legs were about 4 inches too long. Swapped with Medium and the waist is too small. Does anyone make a pair of hiking pants for a very muscular man (34-35 inch waist with 32 inch inseam anymore?)

    The Travelers Dream Pant

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I bought these for a family friend and when I asked him how he liked them, I could have had a beer and a half by the time he was done raving. He's not very tall and he usually has a really hard time buying technical gear due to his shorter inseam. Let alone a convertible pant Forget About It!

The Northface Brand has been a lifesaver in their shorter inseam options and when he's traveling across the country living his retired dream via motorhome and spending some much needed time on the boat fishing in the off time, these pants have hit, no, EXCEEDED on every mark. Coverage and comfort when you need it and some perfect length shorts when the temps get up there.

All in all, superb pant, durable for the roughest of fishing days and versatile enough to cruise the streets in style!

YES! These pants rock, and don't break the bank!

    Way TOO BAGGY

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: M
    • Height: 6'0"
    • Weight: 180lbs

Good fabric but horrible design. Like two big potato bags sown together.

    Great pant, best travel pant

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: 32
    • Height: 6'0"
    • Weight: 175lbs

Wear these when I travel and whenever I’m outdoors. Love these pants and has the perfect front pocket for passports. Never have had an issue with zippers or tears. I wish they were a bit longer overall but that’s just my frame.

    OMG way too big

    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: L/Reg
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 175lbs

I ordered these pants in mid-grey and granite bluff for my upcoming hiking trip to the amazon. The grey fit me perfectly, just as expected and the Granite-Bluff are 4" too big in the waist and hang down 3" past my feet. Not sure how 2 pants from same mfr. in the same size can be so different but wow. sending them back. And yes, I checked all labels to be sure it wasn't a mix up in shipping. Sizes are the same...

    Great Climbing Pants

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: medium
    • Height: 5'9"
    • Weight: 171lbs

these are absolutely great climbing pants with the option of being a summer short or a winter pant. very quick to dry and good fitting. They do however run a little big for me. i Ended up getting a small which i am normally a medium.

    BEST pants for my hubby

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 5'11"
    • Weight: 165lbs

Best fit I've ever seen on my husband. The quality is not too thick, not too thin (like REI brand). They're warm enough for the winter, and cool enough for the summer. I just wish the shorts were a little longer.

    Best pant I've ever worn

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 34
    • Height: 6'3"
    • Weight: 210lbs

I'm a field tech and teacher. I've worn these surveying deep in the bush of the Kalmiopsis and to lead IEP meetings. Nothing has ripped them, despite how much I try. They are a full 3 season pant, good for almost anything. Great fit. All zippers still work.

    Perfect for hiking

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium Long
    • Height: 6'2"
    • Weight: 150lbs

I bought these for a 30 mile backpacking trip. Needed the pant legs in cooler parts of the day, but zipped them to shorts in the afternoon. Really handy to have! Others in my party were carrying both pants and shorts and were jealous of the versatility. They breathe well but also provide good protection from sun, wind and water. They fit as expected but are a little baggier than the pictures depicted. Overall I am really happy to have them.

    Great Pant of Versatile Weather

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: medium
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 175lbs

I bought these pants for my job at the University of Utah's grounds crew because of the variable weather we work in. The water resistance as well as the convertible nature of these pants made them perfect for the job. No matter what weather I'm working in, I can pretty much always rely on these pants.

    Durable

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: M/Reg
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 180lbs

Material feels pretty burly and durable. Has sort of a stiff feel like a hard shell almost. The zip offs are a nice feature. The zippers are color coded so it's easy to zip it back into pants mode. Pocket placements were well thought out and the belt it comes with does the job. Although, I'm not sure how long the plastic buckle on the belt will last.

    Bought as a gift

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Height: 5'4"
    • Weight: 137lbs

Bought it as a gift for my brother, looked at the size chart as a guide but it didn't fit as expected. Runs large.

    Hiking

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: Settled on Large
    • Height: 5'11"
    • Weight: 230lbs

I like them. I utilized the pants for a 30 mile hike in weather that varied from 83F on day one, heavy rain on day two, and finally 26F with snow by day three, that sucked. We ended up just hiking out and leaving the third day as our gear was soaked from the second day even though it was under our rain gear. The pants were not an issue, although my rain jacket of the same brand was rendered useless from the heavy rain. The pants allowed for adequate ventilation on the first day as well as protection against the wind and cold by the third day. They were surprisingly warm.
I am a little unhappy with the fact that the sipper handle dislodged on one of the pant legs after only being used a few times. Sipper still works. Other than that they did stain slightly with minimal use and the sizing was an issue. I ended up trying on three pairs before I found a fit. The sizing charts did not help. On the plus side, Backcountry shipped all three for free and allowed free returns until I found the correct size, so fantastic job there. Pay attention to the length variation with change in size up or down. Tried on an X-large first, but could have used that pair as a sleeping bag.
Overall they are probably worth the money at a discount but maybe not full price?

    Unanswered Question

What the difference in size of XXL and 3XL long?
And is the size reg the same as long?

    Unanswered Question

what is the inseam length off the shorts after the leg is removed? I did see it say 10 inches. Is this correct?

Do you have The North Face Paramount Trail Convertible Pant - Men's in stock
with 30 inch inseam and 30 inch length? which of your sizes would that correspond to?

    Hey Wolfgang!

The closest size to that would be the S/Short, which has a 30" waist and 29.5" inseam. Feel free to reach out if you have any further questions; I'm always happy to help you out.

The product description here says the inseam is 32", but doesn't say which length that it applicable to (I assume "regular"). What is the inseam on the "long" style pants?
