Misses the Mark in Crucial Areas

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I really wanted to love this bag but it fell short of the mark in many crucial areas. First and foremost, the ergonomics were poorly thought out. One of the backpack straps attached to the side of the bag so if you try to just throw one strap over one shoulder for a half-on carry, it continuously slips off your body (and the straps are thin and provide no support). Equally disappointing, there's no duffel strap to carry this bag like a duffel bag which it passes itself off as a hybrid of. All the compartments are great, but having the laptop pocket so that the laptop is against your back (and without padding!) is poorly thought out design. The "adjustable compartment" wall on the inside would be nice but the points of attachment come undone easily on their own. The water bottle pocket does not stretch so you are very restricted in size/shape of water bottles you can use. Paracord drawstrings on the outside for a sweatshirt/windbreaker would've been a great touch. Finally, the plastic buckles on this bag are very thin and cheap. North Face needs to come up with a better hybrid version of the base camp duffel. You're so close and it's right there in front of you. Once you get it right I'll purchase again but for now, this is getting returned.

love it

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] love the storage, it's compact but holds a lot, the main compartment has a movable divider, the straps hide away, and it looks great.

carry-on size, perfect for weekend trip

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I rarely write reviews but needed to for this bag -- I have taken it on a weekend trip (airplane) and on a two-week vacation abroad, and it is officially my favorite backpack. It DOES fit under the seat in front as a carry on. This was my biggest hesitation when I purchased it but I've flown major airlines and budget airlines and nobody has given me a hard time. The duffel / backpack dual function works great. Easy to transition between them, and looks natural in both (none of the "why are you wearing your duffel as a backpack" or vice versa). Backpack straps distribute weight well, I've had no neck or back pain while using these (and for the two-week trip it was over 20 lbs). Very functional easy-access pockets. Although I will say I have not managed to use the shoe pocket for my shoes. I also have not figured out how to roll it up to stow it. Laptop holder also works great, I like that my laptop is against my back and not facing outward. Lastly it's very lightweight, which was great for the weekend trip as I did not need as many things, and the bag was not entirely full. I did not need to weigh (ha) the pros and cons of taking a bag that was slightly too large, because there was no added weight. The extra space was a bonus, if I decided I wanted to bring anything back with me. And otherwise, the bag still worked great and was lightweight.
