Borrowing shifting technologies from its pricier XO1 sibling, the GX Eagle 12-Speed Rear Derailleur is a low-cost alternative that retains SRAM's X-Sync 14-tooth lower pulley system, X-Horizon parallelogram design, and Type 3 Roller Bearing Clutch. Best of all, it's fully compatible with Eagle XO1 and XX1 drivetrains, giving you an affordable replacement in case of a catastrophic crash.

    Instead of its forged aluminum cage and titanium spring found on the XO1, the GX 12-Speed Rear Derailleur employs a traditional aluminum cage with steel spring as a cost-conscious alternative without sacrificing durability, albeit with a minor weight penalty. Expanding on SRAM's signature technologies, the X-Sync 14-tooth lower pulley accommodates the larger 10 to 50-tooth cassette found on Eagle. For silent operation, the Type-3 Roller Bearing Clutch eliminates derailleur bounce and chain slap when you're rallying over punishing trails.     Just what I wanted

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

    Works will with the eagle setup. The cage arm is long so it makes me nervous about hitting on rocks SRAM GX Eagle 12-Speed Trigger Shifter Black, Rear - SRM00C5-BK-REAor getting branches tangled in it but I guess it is a necessity for such a wide gear ratio.

    Solid Performer

    Solid performance, excellent range, and at a great price! There literally is nothing to not like about this derailleur. I have always been a big fan of SRAM's "set it and forget it" reliability and this component is no exception. I've had this RD on my bike for about a year and have literally not touched it since the bike was new. Despite that, the RD shifts crisp and true.

    Best bang for your buck MTB drivetrain

    If you are looking at upgrading to Eagle and confused about all the different models, let me break it down for you. XX1 Eagle is the top of the line with a hollow pin chain and single piece milled Cromoly cassette. X01 saves about two Benjamins and is functionality the same except for weighing 40g more than the XX1. The GX eagle cuts some corners, using a standard chain design and the cassette is stamped and riveted like a normal cassette instead of milled.
    FUNCTIONALLY THE GX EAGLE IS THE SAME AS THE XX1 AND X01. I cannot stress this enough. The only reason to go with the X01 or XX1 over the GX eagle is if you are an super extreme XC rider trying to save every gram or just really like gold and willing to drop and extra grand. With that cleared up, onto the review.
    The Sram GX eagle is surprisingly straightforward to install. Sram has a fantastic video that breaks down the installation and adjustment to a 10 minute video. With the proper tools it took me an hour, included the time it took to install the XD driver. But if your bike already has an XD driver, installation is a breeze.
    The smoothest shifting I have ever had the pleasure of using. With every gear change the chain seems to lock perfectly into the next chainring, even when downshifting 5 or 6 gears at once. With the narrow wide design being utilized on the jockey wheel as well as front chaining, I have had no issue with the chain slipping or coming off, even after testing it off some intense drops on a hardtail. The clutch keeps the chain very taught and prevents it from slapping around on rocky sections.
    Overall the best drivetrain for the dollar right now. The only complaint I have about the GX groupset is I am not a fan of the front chainring mounting design on the new cranks. Save some money and use your old cranks and just purchase the drivetrain. I'll take my old XTR four bolt cranks with a Raceface chainring over the Xsync design anyday.

    Just bought a full GX groupset for my bike, and the whole thing performs perfectly. Sure it is not as light as the higher end options but it works so well and you can not beat the price.

    I am not a fan of the first line of tech specs saying budget friendly rear derailleur. Sure, it is, but the quality is there as well. Why pay so much extra for XX1 when you can get such great quality for a lower price. Sure, you add a little weight with this set, but if you aren't an XC maestro, a little extra weight never really hurts, does it?

    Best derailleur for the money

    Throughout the year I have the privilege of riding a lot of different bikes. I have ridden bikes equipped with Shimano SLX, XT, XTR as well as bikes fitted with SRAM GX, X01, and XX1 Eagle. Though all of these drivetrains are awesome GX Eagle stands out as the working man's hero. Compared to X01 and XX1 Eagle, GX Eagle offers nearly as refined of a shift feel. GX Eagle does have a slight weight penalty compared to its more expensive siblings but you save a ton of money compared to those more premium offerings. Bang for your buck I believe GX Eagle is the best drivetrain on the market. I highly recommend this rear derailleur if you want smooth shifting and a huge range.

    The everyman's 12speed

    Got it in a GX eagle group. Setup straighforward. And it works like its more expensive stable mates. No excuses for 12-speed wide range upgrade now that GX eagle is widely available.

    GX = "Goodbye XT"

    Some might consider SRAM's Eagle GX to be a 3rd tier groupo behind XX1 and X01. I'd agree with SRAM in saying XX1 and X01 are equals, with X01 being all mtn focused, and XX1 more XC focused. That leaves GX Eagle in the next tier down, and I believe in line with Shimano's competing XT level of components. All that said, GX is better than XT, better range, better shifting under load, quicker feeling shifting actuation, and probably better weight. I've got Eagle GX on one bike, and X01 Eagle on another, and aside from the shift lever clocking, I can't tell a difference in performance between the two. If you're not counting grams, go Eagle GX.

    I love this stuff. Pricing is fantastic, so when you inevitably break or bend a derailleur, you won't have to take out a second mortgage on your home to afford a replacement. Shifting feels snappy and crisp, and I have had no ghost shifting or similar issues. Well done SRAM!

    Quick, quiet and ground-breaking

    The GX Eagle gear is SO nice! I thought for sure trying to do another gear would result in loose chain tension, noise or at a minimum extra tuning work. None of those happened. This has been GREAT and makes the move to 1x drivetrain so much easier to deal with. Super happy with this purchase!
