I have taught navigation for a basic mountaineering class and I highly recommend this compass to students. It is accurate, has 2 degree graduations and is easy to use. The base plate has markings on it showing west and east declination. The dial rotates with respect to the base plate for finding "direction of travel" or using the compass on a map as a protractor to find your heading to your destination. I have carried this exact model compass in my backpack for several years (hundreds of days hiking and climbing) and it still works flawlessly. You can purchase much more expensive units with features you probably don't need, and will rarely, if ever, use, but this compass is lighter and 100% accurate as a compass can be for finding your way, identifying your location, or finding your back-azimuth to get home again. Even when I have my GPS along I have this compass because it is easy to use, doesn't require batteries, never has to "find" the satellites, and the weight is negligible. If you are an expert with map and compass I think you will agree with what I have said. If you are a beginner you will find this unit totally satisfactory for a long long time. There are lots of instructions and video's on-line on how to use this compass. I have used several types (military, lensatic , phone applications and such) but this is the best style compass for general map and compass work. It is fun to learn to use a compass and of course helpful in finding your location if lost. This one will do what you need for a long time.
No adjustable declination
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
I couldn't easily tell from the description, but this compass lacks a declination dial
