Support for your hikes while your ankle stays free.

Whether you're strategizing your suitcase for a multi-purpose trip to Patagonia or escaping the glow of city lights to see an obscure comet, the Salomon Women's Ellipse GTX Hiking Shoe makes your decision easy. Waterproof, rugged, and lightweight, this hiking shoe offers support without the clunky heaviness of other trekking togs. The Gore-Tex Extended Comfort membrane guarantees your trail-trodding tootsies waterproof and breathable protection, so long as the water doesn't rise higher than the shoe. EVA in the middle gives you the confidence to walk all day while the molded arch shank gives you the support to tote a load. Contagrip on the bottom isn't shy about grabbing a piece of the ground so you stay vertically oriented, even when moving with a purpose over sleet-slicked cobblestones.

Not quick drying

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

This is a versatile and light shoe that I liked for general hiking, but there are two issues to note. First, they come up slightly too high on the instep side and rubbed against my ankle when walking. After a couple hours of wear, I had to pull the tongue to the side to act as a cushion between the shoe and my sock so that my skin wouldn't be rubbed raw underneath. Second, I inadvertently flooded the shoes once and the insides took 24+ hours to dry out, even after leaving them out all night to air dry. Although I changed to new dry socks twice over the next day, I was still getting wet feet. While they were waterproof for puddles and very shallow streams, I would suggest higher or quicker-drying shoes if you anticipate encountering any deeper water.

Right size, wrong fit

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 7
  • Height: 5'3"

They run true to size and even allowed a little extra room for a heavy sock. However they came up way too high on my foot and rubbed my ankle with every step. That might just be my own specific anatomical issue as I've had that problem with a few other brands. None of the reviews I read mentioned the height around the ankle being an issue so I thought I should mention it.

Perfect Lightweight Shoe

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 9
  • Height: 5'8"

I saw the reviews and ordered a half size down - I usually wear a 9 and ordered an 8.5. I thought the 8.5 would work, but after hiking with some thicker socks, decided I really would be better off with the 9. Backcountry handled my exchange no problem even though I had already hiked in the 8.5's. I'm glad I went with my normal size in the end - they are slightly bigger than my other size 9 shoes, but I definitely needed the room for thick socks. Overall great shoes! So lightweight and waterproof at the perfect price point!

Most comfortable hiking shoe

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 8
  • Height: 5'4"
  • Weight: 122lbs

I went hiking in Montana in a varied terrain and these shoes supported and held up like troopers. I was leery of buying a hiking shoe online and was subtly surprised at how comfortable and perfect the fit was. I have narrow feet and wore smart wool socks which made the fit perfect otherwise they might have been loose around my ankle/heels with a thin sock.

Great hiking shoes

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These hiking shoes are light, durable, and keep your feet warm even when they get wet. I've had these shoes for about a year now and I hike in Colorado almost every weekend. They are so comfortable and keep my feet happy walking 10-15 miles in a day.

Great show for this beginner

I've always been a bit "outdoors averse," but decided I could no longer live in Utah without exploring the beauty around me. I bought these shoes for hiking with friends, and from the first hike they've been exceptionally comfortable and versatile. I've only hiked 5-6 miles per hike in them, so I can't speak or longer adventures, but they aren't giving me any discomfort to speak of. Highly recommend.

    Great walking shoes

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: 7.5

My sister and I have planned a trip to the UK and we wanted to find comfortable walking shoes. I ordered the petunia - the color is exactly as pictured on the website. They look purple to me but my sister says they look blue to her. Regardless, the color is nice. I normally wear an 8 but based on other reviews, I bought the 7.5. They fit perfectly and feel great. I have taken several city walks on uneven sidewalks on very hot days - my feet don't hurt at all, they stay cool, and the arch support is perfect for my high arches. I've always just worn running shoes for walking and didn't expect to tell any big difference in these, but I can honestly say my feet felt better after a walk in these shoes than in any other shoe I've owned. No blisters or hot spots on my toes or ankles, and plenty of room for my wide feet even in the smaller size. I highly recommend them. And kudos to shoes arrived very quickly in perfect condition. I'll definitely come back for future purchases.

Go-To shoes for wet, cold, even snow

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

I've had these shoes for seven months, and we've been through a lot together. From damp, rainy hikes with the pup, to hiking at Mt. Rainier over snowfields and slippery volcanic rock, these are some pretty great and versatile hikers.

They are definitely waterproof. Rain and snow beads up and doesn't cause any wet sock misery. The gusseted tongue is a bonus: keeps trail riffraff outta my shoes. Good stable sole design with a quite roomy toe box. While I consider these true to size, I sized up from my normal 9 to a 9.5 to save my toenails. I size up in all hiking/running shoes.

Two cons that I've run into: insole and material used for the sole itself. I wish Salomon would have used a nicer insole. The existing one is a piece of thin foam that fits poorly in the arch area. It is, however, easily removable so you can use your own insole of choice. Second, I'm finding that the lugs in the inner part of the sole at the forefoot and heel are wearing down faster than the outer part of the sole. They should have used a slightly sturdier material for longevity.

Overall, love these shoes. They are my go-to's.

    Decent outdoor shoe

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

I got these shoes to wear to work 40 hours a week. I am a landscaper so waterproof is very important to me. The shoe fits comfortably like any gym shoe would, and was nice because work boots I have worn in the past needed "breaking in" time or feel bulky. I did notice for me, the toe area was a bid wide for my feet. Never had any issues with treads or slipping. The waterproof lasted until the bottom of the shoe started to split from the fabric, but my shoes take a good beating at work. Was happy how long they survived and were nice and breathable for hot summer Chicago weather.
