    Access new climbs.

Long treks to the crag or rocky hikes with lots of scrambling involved are specialties of the Salewa Men's Firetail 3 GTX Approach Shoe. This technical approach shoe offers the combination of grip, durability, and comfort needed to handle everything from long hikes on maintained trails to scree field climbs.

The EXA Shell grid structure wraps around your upper foot to provide a precise fit and perfect front-foot balance while also minimizing abrasion of the breathable mesh upper. The 3F System connects to the lacing to wrap around your heel and mid-foot as you tighten the laces in order to lock your heel down and reduce fatigue and friction. The upper is backed by a Gore-Tex Extended Comfort membrane for supreme waterproofing and excellent breathability.

Cleansport NXT antimicrobial technology inhibits the growth of odor-causing microbes to limit foot funk. A wide climbing area behind the toes on the Vibram Reptile outsole helps you climb and scramble with confidence, and its Megagrip compound ensures dependable traction on wet and dry surfaces alike.

Salewa delivered! Super comfortable, tested on rocky desert trails in Sonoran desert, in the Polish Tatra Mountains and in Tasmania. No complaints! And they are very stylish, got many compliments.

For those out there who are experienced technical climbers, then there in nothing in this review that I can offer that will help you with any decisions regarding this shoe as I am a novice at best. I am an experienced Military Veteran who has recently transitioned to the private sector, so I do know about movement (tabbing, hiking, trekking, patrolling) over great distances, with plenty of weight, in all sorts of weather and terrain. All that said, I purchased these shoes for use in activities that they were not intended to be utilized with pretty good results. I purchased these shoes for use for work on the range, convoys, urban and rural settings. Perhaps not the rocks, boulders, and crags they were intended, but lots of hours on my feet and plenty of movement under load. They have performed will, up and down stairs, through windows, in and out of vehicles, over and around obstacles, and long hikes, even runs in all sorts of terrain.
The niche I mentioned in the title is overlap of "barefoot" footwear which is typically a minimalist design, and hiker footwear which is typically "compression" like around your feet. I tend to avoid hiking footwear for that reason, and I wear a barefoot like shoe whenever possible (I prefer Lems, Topo, Altra). I also manage Lowa in a wide but Salewa has always been too restrictive and I have avoided them. Not so much the case with these shoes. They aren't barefoot wide (oh how I wish) but they are wide enough so as not to push my big toe at an inboard angle, and while my toes are not able to "splay" like in an Altra, they are not smashed together either. They are pretty comfortable.
The fit and finish are exceptional, and the color scheme is conservative which is a huge plus for my line of work. They don't scream "hipster" nor do they come off as "tacticool" either. Another niche they may fill.
For my needs, the sole could be a but stiffer, and use a harder rubber compound, and perhaps a more aggressive all terrain tread - but I understand that I am using them in an unintended manner, so I give them a pass.
Overall, I really like these shoes, so much I purchased a pair of the non-GoreTex for warm weather use and have found them equally comfortable and able to stand up to the rigors of what I put them through.

      Great shoes, awesome grip

I took these to Costa Rica and they were awesome. We were there during the rainy season and these shoes were awesome on arenal volcano and super comfy. Definitely recommend these. Some days these were completely submerged and I was surprised at how well they dried even given the fact they were goretex.

      Spidey Man

I have a wider foot and trying to find a pair of approach shoes that fit was quite the effort until I found these! From running up and down the trail to scrambling all over the Wasatch, these shoes are feeling pretty good. This is my first pair of approach shoes and I feel like Spiderman being able to walk up and down some steep rocks. They edge well and I have a soft enough sole so I am able to determine exactly where the rock in under my feet. I wore them around the house and to work for a day or 2 before I hit the trail and they gave my feet zero problems. The laces are quite thin and take a little work to get them tightened how I want. Overall, I'm pretty stoked.

I am extremely selective when it comes to shoes and I was very impressed with the Firetail 3 GTX. I took the shoes up The Grand and they were the only shoes I used the entire trip. They were extremely comfortable while hiking, climbing and even with crampons. I purchased the GTX version since I was kicking around in the snow, but would definitely opt for the non-GTX version for warmer weather approaches.

      Husbands favorite pair

I surprised him with these for his birthday after seeing he had a few old pair of the same brand. He can still wear them 6 years later (he's tough on them)- so they're tough. They last. He LOVES them, but is saving them for fall and winter because the gortex doesn't allow his feet to breath in the desert of the valley.

        Top notch

These very quickly became one of my favorite shoes of all time. I love the way that they fit, and feel on my foot. They're super durable, and have great traction. I use it for approaches, and scrambling, but could be used for moderate rock climbing, too. All around, an excellent shoe .

        Awesome Travel/Outdoor Shoe

Bought these for a trip to Thailand, which included a ton of walking and hiking. The shoe shop were comfortable after being worn for many hours, hadn't solid traction off-trail, and were water resistant through small streams. Super light too, I attached them to my backpack with a caribiner without issue. Highly recommend.

Great shoe for the desert and daily wear

I have been wearing this shoe for over a year now. We have been down several slot canyons guiding Zion surrounding areas. Long approaches to all southern and northern Utah crags, to walking my dog around the neighborhood, and going out on dates. Most definitely one of the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. The Vibram rubber has proved itself climbing 5.10s outside and multi pitch moderates in red rock NV. They also dry super fast after a day guiding in water canyon, they dried over night after I pulled the insert out and left them outside. They were dry the next morning for another trip down the canyon. I would recommend this shoe to anyone that loves to wear their approach shoes everyday and be ready for spontaneous adventures anytime.

        First impression

Very well made is the first thing I noticed, I like the look of them and the tread pattern is aggressive enough. I just bought these and have only had a chance to wear them a little so not yo much feedback yet.

        Best Hiking Shoe

My wife initially got a pair of Salewas and loved them, so I both these and am absolutly blown away by the build and performance. We have put them through the wringer, post holing (unintentionally) summiting in Colorado in the Spring to 14ers and trail running and hiking this summer. They are bomb proof and I will never buy another brand. Worth every penny.
