    Nothing fishy here.

Out on the river on a hot day and you're ditching the stuffy waders and cumbersome vest in favor of the Patagonia Stealth Atom Sling. It carries your tackle boxes when you don't want that plastic digging into your thigh and even has room for an extra reel, packable rain shell, and maybe even a beer (or two). The drop-down panel opens flat for easy access to your fly keeper, a welded pocket keeps your cellphone or camera dry, and if you get thirsty you have easy access to your water bottle.  It's a simple thing to slide this sling around to your chest for ease of use on the river, and with extra rigging on the outside for tools and spool, everything you need is never far from hand.

    Nice Bag-Not for fishing

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

The Stealth Sling drew me in because of the volume. Many fishing packs do not have the volume to fit layers, snacks, and other essentials for a long day on the water. With 15 Liters of space, this bag was indeed able to fit all my fishing essentials plus a vest for chilly spring days. There are two primary pockets plus a 3rd stash pocket that fits slim things like a fishing license or reference book. There is one more pocket on the front of the sling that fits small items like flotant. Overall, I do not find this bag has attachment points that are easily accessible, and the style of internal dividers does not allow for secure storage of your gear. The internal dividers are all open and allow for items to roll around inside.

Having only one sling, this pack hurts your shoulder over time, and it is not easily set up for someone that wants to wear it over the left shoulder. I did not find that it hindered my casting. The bag is not intuitive when trying to locate gear quickly and the external attachments do not make sense as they are set up since you cannot really access the bag on the fly. As a bag, it is sturdy and well made, but I would not choose this as my only fishing bag.

    Solid Option

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

this was fantastic for fishing for 4 days straight recently! Ease of access, pockets, etc. Granted, I was fishing out of a boat so it was more for storage than used the proper way, and I could see some of the below issues of weight being a downer on long wade days.

    Multi Purpose Pack

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I picked this up for my go to everyday fly fishing pack which it is perfect for. Low profile, plenty of pockets and room for all my gear and snacks. However, my wife has begun using it while hiking with our dog on the weekends. Great all around product.

    Does the job

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Gave this as a gift but got feedback.
He has used it several times while he was fly fishing and loves it. Holds everything he needs with great function and easy access to what he has in it.
Definitely recommends it to anyone wanting to purchase it.

    Versatility

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The Patagonia Stealth Atom Sling is a great lightweight pack for any fishing trip. It can hold fly boxes, tippet, leader, plus my lunch! And it has a bunch of spots on the outside to hold your nippers, hemostats, and other zingers. The water bottle holder can hold my giant yeti bottle without ever coming out. The best part about this is the front zipper pouch. It allows you to change flys in the water. Never again will you be fumbling your flys around and lose one.

    Worth it!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I was hesitant on purchasing a sling due to the fact I always used hip packs. Getting this sling is definitely worth the investment. It's comfortable, durable, and easy to maneuver. This sling fits all my fly gear plus more. My favorite feature is the dry pouch. Now I don't have to worry about falling and getting my phone wet.

Great gift for a Fly Fisherman

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my boyfriend and it was just what he was looking for! He wanted a small, versatile fishing pack that was easy to access while in the river or while sitting on shore. The drop down front panel and bottle holder are two of his favorite features!

Good bag but lacks attachment points

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

In hindsight I should have ordered the fishpond but at the time it didn't have the dual main compartment that the Atom did. The fishpond has much better attachment points for tippet, pliers etc. The plier pocket on shoulder strap is terrible as is and I have lost my pliers a couple of times before using a fishpond swivel retractor in case it falls out again. I also have some issue with it sliding down shoulder somewhat but found that keeping the bag light will help with that. With all of the negatives said, the main pocket and front hard pocket with fly patch are excellent. The dual main compartment allows for a headlamp, rain gear and water filter in back with fly boxes and leader wallet in front half. I have found using the filter and keeping the water bottle weight out helps it carry better on a long fishing trip.

Go to fly-fishing pack when backpacking

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I toss this bag in my pack anytime I'm heading out on a fly-fishing backpacking adventure. I love being able to hike deep into the backcountry in search of trout. I don't love sticking my fly box and other fishing essentials in my pockets. This pack is small enough to shove in my main backpacking pack on the way in and then pull out once I've set up a base camp. Keeps all my fishing essentials handy for a day out on the water. Plus the water bottle carry is genius.

    Very versatile product!!

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Height: 5'8"
    • Weight: 175lbs

Let's start with the fact that I am primarily a kayak fisherman. I am just getting into fly fishing and plan to chase trout this fall when they are stocked locally. For now though, I fish for bass and sunfish. Recently went out in my kayak with only my fly rod , and decided to try putting the Atom Sling Pack over my PFD. Of course, I had to sit a little awkward to make it comfortable, but I could make it work! Now for the important details: I really like the Atom Sling! Why? Versatility. This pack can be used in so many different ways. When using it as designed it spins around to the back so that when standing in my kayak, I almost forget I'm wearing it. Then when sliding it to the front so I could make tackle changes it was very easy to access all the pockets. Since I am just starting, I am still experimenting with how to set the pack up, and again, it's so versatile there are lots of options. I liked having the tippet holder on the outside so I could have immediate access to pull some line off. Since I don't have that many flies yet (1 large and 1 small pack and neither is close to full) I did not come anywhere close to filling up the inside of the pack. In my research before purchasing I was very concerned about getting just the right size, not too big or small, and I think I nailed it! I look forward to more time on the water so I can refine my setup, especially when I take my first trout trip this fall!
I also foresee using this pack for short hiking trips. Having good storage, a place to carry water, etc. I think it would make a great hiking pack! At least for the short trips that I would take. It would also work great for a day at an amusement park. It's so light and comfortable.
In closing, I will say this was my first purchase from Backcountry. Their service has been great! My Gearhead (they assign you a "personal Gearhead" to follow up and see if you have questions, problems, etc.), Sam Hurst, has reached out several times to follow up and make sure I am satisfied with my purchase, see how I am using it, ask if there is anything he can help with. At first I was skeptical of the whole idea, but now I think it's a great way to stay in contact and give great customer service. When I placed the order I had reached out through the online chat with a question and received the same great service then. I am really impressed!
In closing, though I was a first time customer, I'm sure I will be a repeat customer. Great customer service before and after the sale, great products! What else could you ask for?!

    Good for a Sling Pack....

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Height: 5'7"
    • Weight: 160lbs

After researching and trying on several sling, chest and hip packs for fly fishing, I decided that the Atom Stealth Sling had the best features for what I was looking for. My criteria was: enough room for a few fly boxes, small tackle and tool holders, water bottle holder large enough for a nalgene, clip for a net, enough extra room inside for a packable rainjacket, small camera and snacks and above all COMFORT.
While I tried this sling on without gear, it is extremely comfortable, but fully or even partly loaded this sling is literally a pain in the neck. It is not only uncomfortable, but it constantly slides of my shoulder, even with the cross strap buckled. The only way this sling can be worn correctly is on your right shoulder, which is my casting shoulder. Why most sling packs are made to rest on your right shoulder is puzzling, as most people are right handed casters.
I since switched to a hip pack with a strap that can worn on either left or right shoulders and hope to have better luck with this. The sling pack would normally end up on the bank and I couldn't wait to take it off at the end of the day.
Out of all the sling packs, I think this one has the best features, but I would highly recommend finding a shop where you can try one out, fully loaded, while demoing a rod. Good luck.

Exactly what I was looking for

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

Great Sling! I’m not sure how I spent so long stuffing fly boxes in my waders and pockets. This sling holds everything I need, plus some extras (beer, er – rain jacket) for a long day. Super convenient to use and comfortable on your back.

    Great for getting after it!

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size

I love this pack, been out on the water this year without one but super glad I have something now. It holds everything I need, including jacket or food (plus essentials like beer) without me having to wade back to shore. I do like the convenient sling for easy access as well.

    Everything I need

This pack is great! I use it for Tenkara fishing but would really be good for anything. It has everything I need! Fits all the fishing gear, but also has room if I want to throw in a jacket or lunch. The waterproof pocket is great as well!

      Solid Slinger

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Height: 6'0"
      • Weight: 180lbs

I had my doubts initially - most of it due to ensuring a proper fit like others who have negative reviews. Give it some time to make minor adjustments, though, and you'll never head to water without it.
Main Pocket: The thing looks small, but is a modified day pack - keeping the bulk over your back and out of the way (and water) to provide the freedom to cast, retrieve, fight, and land fish. I can go all day with it on, meanwhile holding 2-3 fly boxes, Steripen (water purification), a day's worth of snacks, compartment for your shades, sun screen, Ultrathon bug repellent, and a 32 oz Nalgene (seen at the bottom). The phone pocket is too small for an iPhone 6+ but should be fine for just about any smaller phone. There's a loop at the top where you can stick a magnetic net release to make for easy landing (pictured is the small, Wetfly Catch & Release net).
Tying Table (outside of the main pocket): Changing flies out is pretty slick too. All you need to do is unbuckle the bottom strap and flip the sling around. Then open the tying table compartment where there's plenty of storage space for tippet, strike indicators, weights, nippers, etc. Within the tying table is a foam pad to dry out used flies.
Along the Strap: There's a small compartment that'll hold small things such as chapstick, cigar, or gum and has loops on the outside to secure forceps and other fishing tools to keep handy while fishing.
Patagonia thought about it all with this one!

      Solid Slinger

      Okay bag

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I read many online reviews before making this purchase, and I was disappointed that they were such good reviews after I used this bag. Once I received it, it looked great. It's well made, great material and neat options. The one shoulder is actually not convenient or comfortable to me. I have used it several times while wading and I just cannot like this bag. It looks stupid on and it's aggravating. If I could return it, I would.

      Great Minimalist Bag

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've never been a fan of vests and traditional backpacks were too much for me. This sling has been a perfect medium. Fits comfortably, while providing enough space for whatever I might need for a day on the river.
