    Simul Alpine Softshell Pant

Designed for wintertime activities ranging from backcountry skiing to mountaineering and ice climbing, the Patagonia Simul Men's Alpine Softshell Pant is a lightweight, breathable, do-it-all workhorse that you'll want to pull on pretty much every morning.

While the polyester softshell fabric gives you plenty of stretch and breathability, it also shields you from light snow and cold blasts of wind. The articulated cut and gusseted crotch add an even greater degree of flexibility, and the narrower lower leg and adjustable cuffs keep your pants out of the way when you're skinning, front pointing, or glacier walking. Patagonia hooked the Simul up with a water-repellent DWR coating to help you stay dry and also built in its OppoSet waist adjustment, so you'll never have to worry about your pants falling down when you're making some tenuous ice moves or skintrack kick turns.

    • Lightweight, breathable, do-it-all skiing and climbing pant
    • Water-resistant and durable fabric allows for easy mobility
    • Slim fit promotes a comfy fit with full range of motion
    • Gusseted crotch enables easy flexibility
    • OppoSet waist adjustment keeps the fit just how you like it
    • Bevy of zippered pockets stashes phone, maps, sunnies, and snacks
    • Item #PAT02C0

I took these out for a day of use and abuse, summer ski touring in the Uintas. Granted there are better/more dedicated pants out there for skiing/ski touring and bootpacking up couloirs, but it was July and I needed a pair of pants that would keep me reasonably dry but breathe well through the hard work. These 100% fit the bill and got the job done for me--I would 10/10 recommend for any sort of climbing/mountaineering/alpine objectives, although maybe not as a dedicated touring ski pant as they will not hold up long to ski edges and crampon points (I punched a good size hole in them with crampons--but they were definitely not designed for that purpose). That said these were a fantastic balance between breathability, waterproof/fast drying, and stretch for ease/range of motion. Well designed and fabric is awesome!

Took these Ice Climbing for a weekend in Colorado and I didn't even remember I was wearing them! Kept me dry the whole time and stood up to a new ice climber beating! Lightweight and breathable enough to climb in 40 degree weather in the sun and still keep me dry and not rip and be mobile enough to get some high feet and hike up some mountains!

    Alpine and ice

Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I was hoping they would have had a slightly heavier material.... they were barely o.k for ice climbing in moderate weather. The waist stayed snug for me, but keep in mind there are no belt loops which I think would have made me feel better about the pant...if the waist locking system fails you are screwed....I overlooked this when buying them. One last note the waist closure system is functional...but I do have to tug on it once and awhile...so its definitely not perfect. Update: 4/20 Fears came true...waist closure failed on me and I spent the day of climbing focused on keeping my pants up...instead of enjoying the climbing..... bummer

I used these pants and others similar to it on a recent trip to north-central Alaska. Pants perform well other than waist adjustment slipping. DWR finish functions as expected. These pants are a good mid or exterior layer depending on the weather. These pants are not made of material as thick as pants such as dual point alpines and don’t seem to stretch as much. Those issues and the waist opposet are why it’s a 4/5. I’ll keep using them.

    OppoSet Fail

I really wanted to love these pants. Soft-shell is great for mixed alpine use. Adjustable cuffs / ability to run a shock cord through in lieu of a gaiter were all great features. Overall fit, pockets, comfort are all top notch. BUT. I could never get the OppoSet waist adjustment to stay tight. When I had the pants tight around my boots to prevent snow from entering and had snacks in my pockets, the pants would constantly sag down and I could never get the OppoSet waist adjustment to stay tight. This is a pretty major flaw, so I unfortunately had to return them.

    Bomber pants on the Ice

I bought these pants as a soft shell for ice climbing this season. They worked great. I love the zippered pockets, the gussets crotch and how comfortable they are under a harness. Through deep snow I didn’t even bother with gaiters most of the time and just cinched up the draw string on the bottom of the pants. They repel water quite well, but will get a little wet if you’re sitting in snow or it’s nuking on you. I love these also for fall/spring rock climbing. Very versatile, and they look great too. Get a pair, you won’t be disappointed.

These are a great weight of softshell and a better fit than the previous model.

I have last years SImul Alpine and they don't quite fit over AT ski boots. Did they solve that issue with these?
