New from Patagonia's technical fleece lineup, the Men's R1 Techface Hooded Fleece Jacket fits smoothly into our performance arsenal whether we're wearing it for early season climbing or a late-season ski tour. The next-to-skin feel of its fleece construction mimics the warm, stretchy, and breathable Patagonia Regulator fleece, but provides additional abrasion and weather resistance on its face. A DWR finish sheds light precipitation, articulated patterning keeps us moving freely during our ascent, and the hood is compatible with climbing helmets so we don't have to sacrifice safety in favor of comfort. Low-bulk, snag-resistant cuffs keep a low profile on our wrists whether we're cleaning a route or removing skins, and the hem and hood are drawstring adjustable if an unexpected winter breeze makes an out-of-season appearance.

First off, your satisfaction with any article of clothing depends entirely on your expectations; this jacket is no different. If you're expecting anything closely resembling an R1, you'll be terribly disappointed. It's not soft, comfy, warm, or an athletic fit. Expect it to be a full size larger than an R1. If you're expecting a wind- and water-resistant technical layer, that FEELS like one, you may love this jacket. This most closely resembles a softshell with a hint of a fleecy backing, and has a traditional boxy fit. I'm 5'8" with a 42" chest, and wear my Men's M R1 as a baselayer for Temps around 0 and below. It's form-fitting and tight and I can't really fit anything underneath it. This in a Medium fits comfortably, with room for 1-2 layers underneath it. It's also not warm, but it's not supposed to be; it's meant to cut wind and light precip and that's it. But it's also not particularly soft or comfortable, about as soft as a burly softshell, not a soft and comfy softshell. The biggest issue is the naming and marketing. They call it the "R1 TechFace" to capitalize on the success of the R1 and R-series name, but this isn't really an R1 at all. They should call it something different, like the T1 TechFace, or the TF1 to indicate it's not an R1. The only other problem, as a couple other reviewers have mentioned, is the collar. It's pretty stiff and rigid and stands up right in front of your chin and jaw, occassionally rubbing. Zipped up, it doesn't quite fit comfortably anywhere. Goes back to the "burly softshell" comment: burly softshells aren't soft. Otherwise, this jacket is great. Love it. Great under-helmet hood. Great boxy roomy fit. Only thing(s) it's missing is a chest pocket and thumbholes. Both of which my R1 has and I wish this had. I may return this and hope they add these features to future generations. I subtracted stars for mis-labeling this as an R1, stiff and less-than-comfortable fabric, and missing chest pockets and thumbholes.

This is now a staple in my touring laying system. It breaths incredibly well and offers great protection from wind and precipitation. It fits well and is slim fitting enough that a warmer puffy will fit over top without issue. Highly recommend this jacket!

This is my favorite touring layer! I was a bit apprehensive on how lightweight and breathable this jacket is based off the pictures but can confirm this as thin as it needs to be. One thing that surprised me was it does keep the chill away just enough when starting a tour or taking a break.

I love this jacket. I have had mine for just over a year; I initially purchased it to be my primary shell for backcountry skiing but have ended up also using it countless times for winter hiking, mountaineering, mountain biking, running, and even as my shell for spring time resort skiing. I've brushed up against countless trees and even taken a slide down a slope that ripped the two layers I was wearing under this jacket to pieces and it escaped unharmed. It is very breathable, warm when active, decently windproof, and repels moderate amounts of drier snow. I did take it out in a Seattle rainstorm to see how it would do and it wet out after about 20 minutes but has never wet out on me in snow or light drizzles. It is also surprisingly packable. My only critiques are I sometimes wish it had a slightly longer hem for the snow and pockets that could fit climbing skins, though this would be less ideal for its other uses. Going forward I plan to transition this piece for use for non-skiing fall/winter/spring activities and purchase a more ski specific soft shell for touring, though I am very picky. Honestly I cannot recommend this piece enough for any outdoor enthusiast looking for a multi-sport, year round piece.

I took this jacket on my most recent trip to Southern Utah. I was canyoneering through slot canyons. Squeezing through rocks. Scraping my arms and back on the walls. I thought for sure I would have damaged the jacket, but when I got home...and took it off. It was still in mint condition. I'm very impressed!

I run very warm while hiking. This is great as a cold weather light mid layer or as a stand alone for 25-35 F weather. Breathes pretty well and seems very durable. Haven?t used it in rainy conditions. I can see myself bringing this along for summer as well Fit for me is perfect. Purchased Large. 6? 200lbs

Nice athletic fit like most of Patagonia's stuff. I'm 5'10''/175lbs and got the medium. Great for climbing, hood fits well over helmet and will cinch down tight without helmet. No thumb holes like the other R1 hoodie but the cuffs do fit well and don't get in the way for climbing or other activities, they aren't loose or too long. I was hoping with the TechFace finish it would be more wind resistant but it's still a little breezy. Only slightly better than a standard R1 hoodie for wind but it isn't the same weight. It's slightly lighter than the standard R1 and doesn't seem as warm to me but the full zipper design is much better. I like the jacket for the not so cold days but for colder days I think I will get an R2 Tech Face jacket since my original R1 seems warmer.
