    Climbing the ranks.

Long after the tourists have left and the scorching heat has faded into a cool fall breeze, the southern desert becomes a haven for climbing bums. When heading from one route to another, the Outdoor Research Men’s Winter Ferrosi Hooded Jacket does an impeccable job of offering shelter in the wind, rain, and cold.

OR’s synthetic Thermore insulation sits under a tough windbreaking and water-resistant shell. And with added spandex, it offers a stretch that climbers depend on in Indian Creek and Wall Street.

    • Water-resistant and windbreaking shell provides tough outer layer
    • Synthetic insulation offers lightweight warmth
    • Ripstop construction helps to keep the jacket from tearing
    • Hood and hem adjusts for ideal temperature and comfort

    Jacket does it all

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 185lbs

Absolutely love this jacket. I wanted something that could handle 30-50 degrees in NYC with only a shirt underneath. I also wanted a synthetic that could stand up to wind and rain (not a deluge, obviously, but more water resistant than a Nano or Ventrix) without having to put a shell on for 5-10 minute walks outdoors. It's seen 30mph winds, steady rain and snow, and has held up to all with aplomb. I can't really speak to its qualities in the backcountry or while active (yet), but for what I wanted, it's a great piece. Super versatile, warm and comfy without fearing for its durability like I do with my Nano Air (one of my favorite jackets ever, but it does feel vulnerable to snags, etc.). It's as close to a do-everything jacket as I could hope for here.

To the fit, the arm holes are kinda tight, so I would recommend sizing up if you're in between sizes. My L fits great, and i'm usually a M in jackets, so knowing that going in, I was happy with what I got for sure. 5'10", 185, built like a wrestler with large chest and shoulders, and the L still fit fine.

    everything and more

I bought the discontinued color from another supplier as Backcountry was out of my size.
This is a fabulous jacket. That said. I am a jacket freak. First time out it was 41 degrees F and cloudy. Went for a short 4 mile hike and I was very impressed. Just a wicking t-shirt underneath. It breathes incredibly well. No you can’t wear this alone under 25 degrees just hiking. It might be a good runners or climbers jacket at that temp. I have a feeling that it will be a great layering jacket. The chest runs on the small side. Sleeves are excellent length. The collar keeps out wind and zips to you chin. Hood is also warm. I bought a L and I am 5-11 175 lbs. fits well on 69 year old. You will definitely want to size up if you are muscular or husky.

    Excellent jacket!

Its surprisingly warm, light weight and fits perfectly. It is definitely a good buy! I even tried in a rain to see if it was really insulated and water-resistant, the results: PASS. I recommend the jacket.

      Holy Moly

Yeah, this jacket makes a ton of sense. Great construction, fits under a shell but warm enough to wear on its on. I've logged a number of days with it both when I tele and alpine and wore only a dry wick t-shirt underneath. It's athletically cut however if you have shoulders you'll find it just a little bit snug.

      Did not like, disproportionate

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
      • Fit: Runs small
      • Size Bought: M

I did not like this jacket. I had very high hopes but the chest was very tight and the arms huge. I also was very disappointed that the jacket had very little stretch and torso was short and sleeves without a good seal to keep out the cold. Jacket was also very heavy for warmth ratio.

Hey there Louis, you may want to consider the Ascendant or the Deviator from OR. This is designed more as an around town piece, while they others are great for activity and movement.

      Thank you for the review,

Excellent lightweight jacket. Surprisingly warm for its weight. I mainly use it as an around town jacket, though I have spotted it on backcountry skiers. Excellent quality. I highly recommend it.

      Finally, a warm mid-layer w/o the bulk

Just the mid-layer I’ve been looking for. Fleece thick and down warm. Wear it by itself but mostly as a mid-layer. Fit is perfect. Not bulky at all. My large fits and wears well under a Swedish made windshell, also a large, and you know the Swedes don’t do vanity sizing. Nice clean, modern fit. Highly recommended.
