Surprise! These Are Not Warm At All!

No kidding - these are not warm at all - less than a pair of polyestor & wool gloves. I guess it's the Chinese down. They puff up okay but it's rather mind boggling.

I bought these as a liner and I love them. They keep my hands warm and comfy.

Warm mittens but.....

The mittens are very warm but they leak feathers all over and the palm has a sticky grip to it that makes a irritating noise when you grab something.

sad

I would give two stars for the warmth, but overall I'm dissatisfied with everything else, including the customer service and warranty. I contacted backcountry to tell them there was an issue with the stitching. They send me a link and told me to fill it out. I filled it out only to be told from O.R. that I needed to fill out a different form for a warranty claim. I did that. I never heard from anyone, and then I reached back out to back country to let them know. NOTHING FROM ANYONE. Like the rest of the reviews said, these are not very functional, so I only wore them once and packed them up for the season. When I unpacked them this winter to debate using them for a trip, I reached out in regard to the seam coming out. This was all over a month ago. Seriously wish I had purchased from REI, I would have gotten my money back and found a useful product. Instead I'm stuck with these terribly designed mittens.

Hate these

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Hate these. I believe that they are toasty warm like a lot of reviewers said however, they are utterly impractical for anything other than sitting. Other reviewers talked about not having an mechanism to actually hold the mitten onto your hand. This is true. Also, they are huge. So I couldn't even hold my dogs' leashes properly while having these on, and with them sliding down my hands. Unfortunately, I have missed the return window and now am stuck with a pair of fairly expensive, absolutely useless mittens. Guess I'll donate them and hopefully someone else will have better luck than I.

Great Purchase!

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Bought these for a winter car camping trip. It got to -45 degrees F with wind chill on our first night in the car and these things saved my hands. I prefer these mittens for post ski days while hanging around the car, fire, or sleeping when you're winter camping. Also, great to have in your backcountry pack for emergency situations. Highly recommend!

Little Toasters

I've used these through some of the coldest winter days and they keep my hands perfectly warm. Great mittens to have in your gear.

Elastic Issues

Not as warm as I had hoped and not easy to get on due to the choice of elastic. There's no cuff but just a band of elastic sewn into the mitten. Oddly, they started to fall off my hands while walking unless I struggled to put the elastic over my jacket. I'm looking to exchange.

Hi Laurie - thank you for letting me know. I have not heard this yet, but will pass on to my product developer friends at OR to look into it. Thank you, Leta OR Rep

Fire place for your hands

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

These mittens are not work mittens. I say that as they are not mittens you should rock when climbing, skinning, running, etc. They are just too warm. They are perfect for static activity, on a bike, dirt bike, quad, snowmobile, around camp, and defiantly amazing to sleep in on cold nights. The down is amazing at keeping your heat in. Recommendations: a passive hand warmer to "start that fire place" is super helpful with cold hands. The mittens are super light and compressible, if you have the hat; I recommend putting the mittens in the hat and compress all 3 together. Last recommendation; pack these as your back up to your work gloves/mittens. they are so light and small you will only notice them when your hands are warm! Only down side: the space inside the mittens is minimal. This is good as you will warm up the 4 finger pocket quickly. It's a little tight if you have really big hands. In no way is this a show stopper. I have large hands (size 11) and rock the L/XL. They fit... just with minimal space.

Many thanks for the great review! Leta OR Rep

not warm

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Bought these for bike riding in the winter in Boston. They are not warm. The elastic that goes from the thumb to little finger is not comfortable.

These would not be ideal for bike riding because the fabric is not windproof, so you are correct. Their design is for warming hands after using thinner dexterous gloves for an activity, like ice climbing, touring, etc.. They are warming mitts, but not for velocity sports. for biking, you should have a shell on top of them to prevent the wind w=from stealing the heat. Leta OR Rep

Incredible

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Got these for mountainous pursuits / backpacking where its either really cold, or I am lounging around camp and want my hands toasty. These mittens heat up incredibly fast. I would stick my freezing red hands in here and within seconds feel the warmth coming back. They are also very light weight, but seem durable enough for their intended purpose. All this on top of a pretty screaming price point.

Thank you for the review, Craig. These bad boys are like sleeping bags for your hands! Enjoy! Leta OR Rep

Sooo Toasty Warm!

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

This is one of my favorite finds! This mitten is so warm! They are so puffy that it almost looks like I have marshmallow hands when I wear them, but my hands get cold really easily and these protect my hands from the chill. I use them while camping the most or while hiking when it is really cold out since they also have a waterproof treatment.

Thank you Talina! Leta OR Rep

Warm as toast

These are the warmest mittens I’ve ever had. Great product at a fair price. The down Makes the difference.

Very nice mittens that make excellent liners for shell mittens. I bring them winter camping in case it turns super cold and I need more than my fleece liners. Love them!

Good Warm Mitts

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I needed a really warm pair of either mitts or gloves to deal with the problem of painfully cold hands during the winter. After much searching I found these OR Down filled mittens. These things are light, warm, easy on and easy off. I have worn them a few times the past few mornings and they are warm! No problem with being too warm, I purchased the Large size and they fit just fine. The only cons I can find are the silicone pads are a little noisy, and there is no stuff sack for them. Yes they are a little pricey, but well worth it. If you want warm hands in cold weather.

Very nice mittens.

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I picked these up for ice climbing breaks when my climbing gloves don't cut it. Very light and warm, my only complaint is that I find the wrist elastic painfully tight and while the seal is there to keep heat in the multiple baffles already seal fairly well. Possibly just got a poorly made pair, not sure but I trimmed off the elastic cuff, wrapped with repair tape and I like the fit much better. Not sure if OR is going to continue to make these but they are a winner, I would like to see a more adjustable wrist closure.

So Warm!

I love these gloves! I just got a chance to wear them during the first snow this year and they kept my hands so toasty and warm! Even after taking my hands out to futz with my phone and camera, I could pop my hands right back in and they were immediately warm!

Your hands will thank you!

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I purchased these for shoulder season backpacking and to use as a liner in some shell mitts I have had for a while. I have used them for backpacking so far and they were too warm, so I suspect they will be perfect on colder ski days. The weight is negligible, they are well made, the elastic is nice and snug, and they cover the hands and wrists. The palms also have a material that really keeps a good grip on what ever you are holding. Great design and quality.

Say goodbye to cold hands

I always have cold hands and have been so happy to have these mitts. They are compressible so I stuff these in my Hestra Heli Mitts on super cold days or just use them as a standalone. They aren't super tough fabric on the outside so I am careful not to overuse them without a cover because I am afraid of tearing them. I went with a small but am on the fence as to whether or not I could also fit into an XS. But love them and they are orange! Bonus

Thanks for the review! Think of these are sleeping bags for your hands! When you use technical gloves that are thin for dexterity and you need a quick warm up - These Mitts are the ones! Yes, not designed for burliness, but for packability and light weight warmth. Leta OR Rep
