    Trout will tremble.

The newest addition to Orivs' line of trout rods, the Recon 4-Piece Fly Rod was made for the working-class angler that puts the legwork into landing the fish of their dreams. This moderately priced offering from Orvis borrows a similar taper design from its popular, award-winning  Helios 2, resulting in a high-performance rod at about half the price.

Using a top-secret blend of high modulus and intermediate modulus graphite, the Recon casts similarly to the Helios 2. The fast action of the the Recon allows the rod to be loaded at short distances, making it great on medium-sized rivers and creeks, but it still has the ability to power your line to the far end of the river when you spot a fish rising against the bank. The up-locking reel seat keeps your reel secure and features a dark burl wood insert, giving the rod a classic Orvis look. It is made in Manchester Vermont, and comes with an American-made aluminum rod tube with red sock.

    So Good

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I recently got this Orvis Recon rod in a 3wt for some smaller mountain steam fishing I have planned for this summer. I've been out with it a handful of times now and it's quickly becoming my new favorite rod! It not only casts with precision accuracy, but also always give you such a gentle lay on your dry flies. I love the dark green color of this rod, it is super lightweight, feels great in the hand, and most importantly loads so perfectly. Also, it has a lot of power for a moderate-fast 3wt rod, so you'll still be able to take advantage of those long casts you want to throw. I have it paired with the Hydros SL reel by Orvis as well, and it's a combo that cannot be beaten. Overall, such an awesome rod by Orvis, and can't wait to really put it through the wringer this summer!

    Awesome rod

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The Orvis Recon for some reason always seems to end up in my hand on every fishing trip. Don’t be fooled by the price. This rod casts like a dream. It is made in the USA and comes with a lifetime warranty. This rod has a beautiful feel and works well in so many different situations. I have used my Recons from New England all the way to California and have caught fish all along the way. If I had a dollar for every time I thought I had my Helios 2 in my hand and realized after the fact it was my Recon, I would have enough money to buy another Recon. I would recommend this rod to anyone looking for a quality rod at a reasonable price.Pair this rod with the Orvis Battenkill Fly Reel and the Scientific Anglers Wavelength Trout Fly Line and watch this beauty cast. Expert performance at a lesser price. If you have any questions hit me at 801-523-4075 or email me at borloski@backcountry.com

    Awesome rod

Orvis Got it right with this Rod!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The Recon is a pretty Spectacular rod, especially in it's price class. If you are looking for a do-it-all 5 weight, than I would say there are not many better options in this range. I have found that it has all the flex you would want from a moderate-to-fast action rod, but because of the helical Graphite Technology passed down from it's big brother, there is plenty of reserve power on tap for slinging a heavy nymph rig or big hopper into the wind. Not to mention it is a pretty good looking stick, with the dark olive blank, burl wood reel seat, and quality hardware, it is kind of hard to beat.
Also, don't over look the 6wt-7wt as a killer streamer/Bass rod. Set up with a good line like a Scientific Angler Seige or Rio streamer tip, you can really huck some big bass bugs or streamers without killing your shoulder. Give me a shout if you want to know anything else about this rod!

    I LOVE THIS ROD

I absolutely love this rod! It is my go to 9' 5w and I absolutely love it. It casts well in any situation and out performs anything that I have ever used before. It doesn't matter what your casting (streamer, heavy nymph rig, dry) it always performs well and is a dream. It mends well and I feel a lot of control when casting. I also have to say the aluminum rod case is a pretty awesome addition and makes the entire set up really cool.
