Why We Like The Dirigo 106 Kayak
Slide into the cockpit of the Old Town Dirigo 106 Kayak for a casual paddle around the lake or down a slow-moving river. This is the shortest and most maneuverable of the Dirigo-series boats, which makes it perfect for beginners just getting started on the water or vets looking for a boat that's forgiving and easy to paddle.
With the Click-Seal stern hatch, you get enough storage for a medium-sized drybag full of gear—the perfect amount of space to pack an evening picnic—and the contoured poly cushioned seat and Glide Track foot brace system give you a comfortable and stable paddling platform get there. The Dirigo has all the comforts of a floating living room, too, like a molded cup holder, thigh pads, paddle keeper, and a waterproof, glove-box hatch for keys, phone, and other valuables, so you're never unprepared, even when you're on the water.

Not a bad little boat
At 200+ pounds, I'm a bit large for this kayak and probably would be better off with the Dirigo 120, but there are some advantages to the 106. 1. It actually fits inside my SUV (barely), meaning I can just toss it in and go, without having to strap it to the roof. 2. I mostly kayak a narrow river with many fallen trees that I have to dodge -- go over, under, or around. This kayak is quick, maneuverable and responds well -- the Dirigo is more narrow than the other Old Town Rec Kayaks (Loon, Sorrento), and it allows better lean. While the Dirigo 120 would be faster on flat water, the 106 is quicker and more responsive in challenging water. This kayak is rightly not classified for whitewater -- no reason to encourage a novice to attempt class 3 rapids -- but an experienced paddler should be able to navigate class 1 and 2. This kayak also would be good for a smaller paddler looking for a rec kayak that is easy to carry and maneuver, while allowing them to develop skills.
