Why We Like The New Balance Fresh Foam X Hierro GTX Mid Trail Running Shoe
When the trail is rocky and the weather unpredictable, we lace into the New Balance Fresh Foam X Hierro GTX Mid Trail Running Shoe. Through rain, hail, and snow, the GORE-TEX membrane keeps our feet dry without causing them to sweat out, while the burly yet supple leather upper resists abrasions and tears. Reinforced with Toe Protect technology, this pair prevents stubs and bruising as we rock hop, and the adaptable platform molds to the terrain to stabilize our strides.

Nice low walking boot, a bit chunky for running.
I have had these for a few weeks now and they are really comfy. Personally as a runner I would say they are more of a trail walking shoe/boot. They feel a little on the chunky side for running but may suit others if you are after something more sturdy than a running shoe. Due to these being a gore tex lined boot I went for half a size up from normal and this was a perfect fit for me. (I have found another recent pair of NB running shoes were just on the tight size for my regular size so these were tried at half a size over and I'm glad I did.) They have good long laces and the top two lacing hooks make it easy to put them on / take them off without too much lace pulling. I haven't done any serious trail walking in them yet but wet winter walks on pavements and footpaths have been nice and warm and kept my feet dry so far even in wintry rain. They have a nice wide outsole with reasonable lugs for grip. I like the look and colour mix and so far the build quality seems good. Nothing off and feel well made.

Great shoe, misrepresented colours
First off, the colours on the website don't accurately represent the shoe. The greys are very blue, to the extent that I'd call them blue, not grey. The yellow cleats are bright orange, as are the laces and the N. I had to replace the laces as they were too bright. The shoes look better on the website. Colour gripe aside, these are so comfy and functional for an everyday winter trainer. I do love wearing them, I just wish they were the advertised colours.

My favorite walking shoes!
Great shoe for hiking. I’ve taken mine to Switzerland, Italy and New Zealand and like them so much I bought a second pair. True to size, good ankle support, very comfortable day in and day out.

Nice shoe but narrow
I own several New Balance shoes and when I saw these boots I thought they'd be ideal for the autumn and winter time, especially having Gore-Tex. Great looking boots, really like the colours and having different coloured laces makes the boots stand out a bit. The foam cushioning in the sole is really good too but there is one problem with the boots, they're narrow. The weak spot is in the toe box area where it was squashing and pinching my foot. I tried them on with a pair of sports socks, so not thin but then not thick socks either, and they were tight. If you wanted to wear anything thicker during colder months you wouldn't stand a chance of getting your foot in them. It's a shame really as I really liked them but had to return them as they just wouldn't have been comfortable. If the next generation could be made with a wider toe box area as standard then I'd take another look.

Not my favorite Merrill Shoe.
I tried this model because I liked the look and the features (lightweight and waterproof. I had to get a half size larger and the right shoe just does fit comfortably. The upper part rubs on the outside ankle “bone”. I am trying different things and hoping it will break in over time.

Good looking but uncomfortable
Absolutely loved the look of the boot, but unfortunately I had to return them bc they were too stiff, and when I tightened the uppermost shoelace eyelet they dug into my ankle bones. Maybe I just have boney ankles, but they were sore for a week. I would have loved to have kept them, but traded them in for some wonderful 2002Rs, which I am very much enjoying.

Great Hiking Boots
Great hiking and light utility boots. 14 4E fit perfectly and I will be buying additional pairs as soon as my size is available again.

Almost perfect.
All in all, these are amazing hiking shoes for anyone with extra wide feet. The comfort level is out of this world and there is almost no impact resistance when I take a step. My stride feels more like I'm gliding. The only complaint I have is that the toe box of this shoe is incredibly narrow, and it does cause my toes to rub against each other if I wear thick socks. A slightly wider toe and these would easily be the best hiking shoe on the market for people with 4E-wide feet.
