Why We Like The Mystery Ranch Coulee 40L Backpack
Comfort and convenience come together in the Mystery Ranch Coulee 40 Backpack. Whether you're gearing up for an all-day hike in the hills or keeping things light for a quick overnighter, this ingeniously designed bag has your back.
It features an innovative 3-ZIP design that allows us to gain access to the entire main compartment at once. That means no more digging through all our gear just to find an elusive headlamp or hidden camp meal. A lightweight fiberglass frame adds support without the weight when we're hauling a full load into the wild, and the telescoping yoke provides a custom fit that most packs in this size range can't offer.

Perfect all the way around.....
Great product all around; a friend and I each bought one, and I purchased a different style for my son for hiking & scouting... I will never buy anything but Mystery Ranch; the quality is different!

Super comfortable!
I bought an XL size coulee 40 & am very pleased with the purchase. I may even have to buy the M sized hip belt because of my weight loss. Super comfortable & adjustable & plenty of room for an overnight hiking trip! Highly recommend!

Great two day pack
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
- Size Bought:
- XL
- Weight:

This is a big enough pack for a lightweight solo hiker. I can scramble with several liters of water and all my supplies and food very comfortably. The belt and harness are the most comfortable I’ve used with up to fifty pounds of weight. I can’t imagine using this for more, however. If longer duration or more gear is needed, there is the Coulee 50. Built like a tank, big zippers, durable materials. Highly recommended.

Great pack, not roomy
- Familiarity:
- I returned this product before using it

The pack was great but it needed a few things. CONS: 1. First off, the sleeping bag compartment did not have stretch-material straps so if you have a sleeping bag that’s larger than a “backpacking” sleeping bag, it will not fit and you will be forced to put it inside the main compartment. The straps on the bottom also barely fit my 2 person tent. Had to extend them all the way and it was a stretch. 2. The backpack itself did not hold as much as my Gregory 38 liter did, and the MR boasted that it was a 40 liter. So be cognizant of that. You won’t be able to take much more than the essentials. PROS: 1. The material is top notch. I would be confident that if I dropped and dragged this pack on blacktop for a mile, it would hold up just fine. 2. I also enjoyed the tri-zip compartment that lets you access the main body of the pack. Great idea. Overall, the pack is great for days trips or LIGHT overnights. Just didn’t fit my particular needs.

Men’s Coulee 40
For the past two years I’ve tried to go ultralight for my backpacking adventures. I’ve discovered that I’m not a true ultralight guy. Of the big three, my tent and sleep system are ultralight but I’ve decided to retire my ultralight pack for something far more comfortable and user friendly - the Coulee 40. In my opinion, having the ability to flay open the pack, having two stretch pockets, two front panel pockets, dual ice tool attachments and multiple exterior gear tie down points makes for a dream pack plus, I need not fear a strap failure because of Mystery Ranch’s legendary build quality. Cheers.

Perfect for 72 hrs
The pack is well designed with good access and ancillary pockets. It is very comfortable as well for loads up to 40 pounds. Hiked with it in the Grand Canyon and I had zero issues. The only complaint I have is that the you can remove water bottles from the side pockets but cannot replace them while walking.

What is best sized hydration bladder (not volumn) dimension wise for Coulee 40
January 15, 2024
All of a sudden, Mystery Ranch isn't including whether or not packs have a place for hydration bladders and tube ports. So does it? I assume it must, as my old Coulee 25 does.

Does the bag have any sort of divider between the main compartment and the sleeping bag compartment? Similar to the coulee 50?
