TrailShot Microfilter
From ultralight backpacking trips to epic mountain bike rides, the MSR TrailShot Microfilter provides ultra-compact purification, allowing you to drink directly from streams and lakes on the trail. Tipping the scales at a mere 5.4 ounces, the TrailShot tags along in your pack without the bulk or weight of traditional water filters.
The one-handed pump action efficiently filters water of common contaminates, including bacteria, protozoa, and suspended particulates. When it's time to clean the filter itself, simply shake it a few times and get back to filtering water from the stream or lake. It treats up to 2,000 liters of water before requiring a replacement and cleans one liter of water in a mere 60 seconds.

Used it for 5 years- but never will again
I've been using the trailshot for 5 years now, and I used to love it, but after this last trip, I've decided I need to find another option. I follow all the care and maintenance requirements, which I quickly learned in my first year are very very necessary to keep it working properly. Sometimes it slows down a bit and the filter replacements are pricy, but it's perks often made up for a decreased flow from time to time. However, on my last trip (two nights in the backcountry), it couldn't seem to handle any water with tannins in it- which happens to also be the only water around. I tried a flowing river, a small stream, a lake, and also from a collapsible bowl. It was a brand new filter and it worked perfectly on my tap water before we left. I tried all the troubleshooting on the trail: cleaning the filter, checking the pre-filter parts, etc. Still, the pump could scarcely pull any water through. We had to resort to our backup water purification tabs and give up on the filter entirely. I never want to end up in this situation again. I will be looking for a new filter option and will not recommend this product anymore.

Amazing 1-person Filter
Love this filter!! It takes up almost no space in your pack. I really like the option to drink straight from it, and when I fill bottles, it goes quick. The plastic doesn't 'rebound' as quick as I'd like when filling, but it'll still fill a few liters quickly. Definitely only good for 1 person, maybe 2. Wouldn't plan to have a whole team using it, but thats not what its for. Prefect for 1 person though. Great addition to my pack!

Brand new and it is not working
I bought one few years ago and worked pretty well, altough not for very long... I bought recently a new one ans he is not working. The water stay in the caoutchouc bulb and no waterproof is going through. I'm very disappointed because it's expensive.

2nd failure of new TrailShot
Went on a long day scramble to Bean Peak in the Teanaway Washington State. This is my second failure of a TrailShot, this time the filter was brand new, first time use and all I could get was bareley a teaspoon with each hand pump. There is either a manufacturing or engineering flaw with this product causing these type of reported failures. I love MSR products, the stoves, tents, snowshoes. and my current Mini Works filter that I still use all ay back when it started out as a two stage carbon and paper filter. Having said that the TrailShot has a problem that needs to be fixed and I hope MSR is working for a solution.

Worked great for 7 days
I love this filter and used it in western Oregon for 7 days on the trail last year with great success but this year when backpacking with my son it had very little flow. Hardly even used it and I needed it. I tried to free it up as suggested but now looking to replace the guts for about the price of a new one.

Trail shot MSR
only used it a handful of times last summer. Used it last night on a bike packing trip and seemed to be clogged and very slow flow. I like the compact size for bike packing but I had a hard time using it efficiently on my trip ! I took care of it well but didn’t last.

Works well for a quick
Works well for a quick filter on the go. As far as filtering multiple bottles worth of water, it would be kind of annoying but doable. Very simple, easy and light.

Easily Clogged
I have only filtered approximately 2 liters of water through my trailshot. 1 liter was tap water just to test it's function. The other liter was from water that had virtually no sediment in it. It worked fairly well for these instances. I then stored the filter for about a year, and when I tried to use it again it had no flow. I flushed it as per the owner's manual 5 or 6 times but the flow rate would not restore, as advertised. And the cost to replace the filter did not match the performance I was given. Overall, I would not rely on this filter, especially in the backcountry. I have used katadyn filters and they worked very well, I will likely continue using them.
