    It's a tent, not a kite.

First you feel the winds blowing in your hair, then you wonder if your tent will be there when you reach the campsite again, and then you spend the rest of the hike dreading the idea of losing your shelter and everything in it. Instead of worrying through the hike, it'd be better to bring MSR's Needle Tent Stakes. These six, thin, light stakes hammer into virtually any soil to keep you tent secure while you battle breezes on the trail.

    • Six tent stakes make sure your tent doesn't turn into a kite
    • Thin profile hammers into firmer soils easier
    • Light design convinces you to take them backpacking

    Super solid stakes!

These stakes bit really well into the soil I drove them into - almost too well. They're square-ish so they won't turn. The top is really pointy so you'll need a hammer or a solid stick to drive them into the soil. I used some thin but sturdy cord tied in a Prussick knot around the stake to pull them back out of the ground.

      Stakes with a bite

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

These stakes were purchased to reduce my carry weight for an upcoming Philmont trek. Yes, I did consider titanium stakes. But they tended to be skewers. My concern was with "bite" in the soil. Essentially, this is surface area and thus resistance to being pulled out. I have used the MSR groundhogs for many years and have been satisfied with their performance, but needed to downsize. These fill the niche quite well and a good price point.
