Why We Like The Mineral King 2 Tent

The Mineral King 2 Tent fits into Mountain Hardwear’s line as an entry-level backpacking tent that doesn’t compromise when it comes to weight and functionality. We love that its generous 2-person capacity has more room to spread out than other 2-person tents, and it ensures 3-season protection with a removable rain fly and full mesh canopy.

Without the fly, the Mineral King's mesh maintains full visibility for stargazing at night. Mountain Hardwear shaped it symmetrically rectangular with steeper sidewalls for a roomier feel, and two large doors open the vestibules entirely so you can continue stargazing in stormier weather. Plus, the two vestibules are vented to help soggy gear to dry quickly. Unlike most tents, the Mineral King includes a footprint for extra protection from muddy, rocky, dirty campgrounds.

Great Tent!

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Size Bought:
2 person

Finally got to get out in this beauty for a long weekend. Size is perfect for 2 with roomy vestibules on both sides for gear. Without the fly, the sky is open and expansive. Love that see-through mesh. But we had some rain and pretty gusty winds, so the fly went back up. Tent held up like a champ in the wind, even without the guy lines. The doors are extra large, which is helpful getting our double sleeping bag and pads in and out. And set up is incredibly quick and easy. My ONLY complaint is the pockets. 1) The storage pockets are at either end for head to toe sleeping orientation. We sleep the same direction, so someone has to have their pocket inconveniently at their feet. And 2), the stuff pockets for the doors are a wee bit too small. The doors come out unintentionally. Otherwise, I found this tent to be sturdy, lightweight for the durability, and roomy. Would definitely recommend.

Overall very pleased!

Overall, I am very pleased with this tent. I am a bit worried about the longevity of the zipper, which could be stronger and better quality. The insect mesh is perfect, however--very tight and dense.

Lots of room, easy to setup

This is a nice tent that is very easy to setup. It has a lot of head room. I sleep solo in it and it has room for all my gear. The fly zipper snags easily but that isn't a deal breaker.

LOVE THIS TENT!!!

Great tent for what it was designed for. Lightweight but never ever for backpacking unless the Boy Scouts where they haul 60 pounds for 4 or 5 miles. This tent is the bomb for backyard or car camping. It came with its own footprint to protect the already quite durable floor. The poles are pre bent and sturdy. It freestands, which is a convenient plus for setting up, taking down, or moving it to a more level spot! The fly is simple and durable. You will want to keep the fly partially off unless you are getting rained on. The tent ventilates well, but the fly really seals it up, so watch out for condensation. This tent is the one to have!

This tent is perfect.

I did a lot of research before upgrading from the tent I inherited from my parents that was made in the 80s, and while I am certainly generally impressed by how much tent technology has improved in the intervening years, this tent has absolutely every feature I would want and nothing superfluous. It’s absolutely big enough for two people and gear. The double side entry is genius. The pockets are excellent. The awnings are great. The stargazing mesh is fantastic. 10/10 would buy again.

Amazing !

Bought this tent 3 years ago and it is AMAZING. Did a lot of research on tents prior and this one ticked all the boxes and has not let me down. Spacious for a 2 person tent. Can make it breezy for those hotter nights. Have also used in colder weather without a problem. Great quality and always dry. Super easy to set up and take down. Can't imagine a better tent.

Minimalism

The design reminds me of early iPhone design before it got all cluttered. Elegant, well thought out, everything seems exactly right. No more, no less than is needed, the result of hours of complex creative thinking and evaluation. The result is beautiful and simple.

Great Size tent

Great Size tent. Not the best for high strength storms but good enough.

wet

I love the size and durability of this tent and it would be a keeper if only they designed it with the fly being only slightly larger and going all the way down to the ground. The fly is too high, no matter how you pitch it, and the rain always splashes and/r blows under the vestibule and through the mesh tent wall. That is not good. They should know that that would happen. What a shame.

Perfect for 2, + their gear.

Pros: This tent is perfect for a backpacking couple that wants just a little extra space to keep their backpacks inside the tent. Set up could not be easier. I can confirm that it is waterproof as I took it on a backpacking trip in the Cape Breton Highlands and it survived the thunder, lightning, and hard rain that came down in sheets for hours. It kept us perfectly dry. Solid construction. Cons: It should come with 2 more tent pegs, but that is definitely not a deal breaker.
