Great Thin Vest

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium
  • Height: 5'9"
  • Weight: 155lbs

I use this vest primarily for ski touring. It is great for use with a backpack because the synthetic insulation is only on the front of the vest. It is a very thin and light and fit me true to size (5'9 155lbs size medium). I don't think this would be great as a stand alone piece. It is best for layering during high-output activity with a backpack on. For a niche piece it is an invaluable piece of gear to add to my wardrobe.

An amazing vest at an amazing value

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: L
  • Height: 6'0"
  • Weight: 215lbs

I have used this vest several times now and I believe it to be a better value then the puffy old school down vests. The synthetic with the compression back does an amazing job of insulating while at the same time allowing for more movement and flexibly. I use this vest as part of a layering system and would highly recommend it.

Looking good Billy Ray. Feeling good..

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

Manly in the front, spoon you in the back. Nice combination of material to fit snug, but move with you really well. Much better design than a full puffy vest. Great neck, cut well. Small worked for 5'7 155lbs.

How do you compare insulating ability of down vs your synthetics?

Best Answer

For the most part, the insulating ability of down is directly related to the loft of the piece. Synthetics aren't quite so simple because they're not all created equal. However, a lot of higher end synthetics tend to be almost as warm as down and much better in water.

I would recommend reading reviews of pieces with similar insulation but know that most synthetic is about as warm (just not as light and packable) as down.
